hahah, the ones mentioned by people are so true and I fall into a couple of the catagories myself alas...
how about,
The complusive liar:
He (and it's always a he) has a ivy league education, speaks a million languages, gave up a sucessful career (usually computer programmer) to come to Korea, makes shedloads of money from investments back home and of course comes from an impovised working class background. Just checking out Korea for a year....several years later he's still difting from hagwon to hagwon (funnily despite their impressive education never seem to be in uni/company jobs) checking it out. The wealth they are making back home rarely extends to buying a decent suit or getting a round in.
Mr/Miss Korea:
Only meet these types at work as they are loath to spend time with other foreigners unless they have to. Will only eat Korean food, have Korean friends, always bang on about playing gostop or anything that'll impress K-co workers, to be fair they are a wealth of knowledge about stuff like traditional Korean art/clothing/dances ect. But when it comes to studying something about Korea that requires a bit of effort (ie language) they are often found wanting.
The 'Koreans should listen to me more'
A sociologly BA from some glorified scout hut that calls itself a university and all of a sudden this fella knows exactly how to improve Korean society.....sunshine policy/english education/relations with Japan or USA you name it.....they are fecking it up, if only the politicians would listen to this guy. Korea would be transformed into a utopia overnight.
The patriot
USA/Canada/Ireland/England/NZ ect......is the best country in the world, with the best history, best food, most cosmospolitian society....all other countries suck. Ironically this is the person most likely to become a lifer and never return to the land of milk and honey from where they came.

I forgot
Dr Luther King.
Ater years of upper-middle class surburban opression Dr King comes to Korea and upon feeling the wrath of some adjeoshi's stare when he dates a local girl, he then decides to become a campaigner for the right to grope his girlfriends boobs in public. |

| ESL teachers do seem to have a lot of self loathing, which they project out onto other ESL teachers. You're only a loser if you feel you're a loser. And you can tell the people who feel they're losers very easily. They're the ones calling everyone else a loser... |

But I think you overstate your case with "spend every night at hostess bars". Unless they're working at these bars, I seriously doubt they could afford a once-a-week habit. |
Ok, well not EVERY night, but at my first school, there were 2 guys exactly like this. One of them even kept a bottle in a cabinet at one of those bars. They NEVER had enough money to keep them going all month. Honestly, they spent all their money feeding their girl/ booze addictions. One of them always had a new juicy girl as his "girlfriend". they were also in REAL tight with the boss, and the boss would regularly take them out to nightclubs. Then he'd buy them girls from one of those streets with only numbers above the um, establishment (this was in Incheon)... |
Did one of them have a name that rhymes with male genetalia? |

So for example would your statement apply to say someone like Kerr (assuming he doesn't FEEL like a loser? )
I think your theory needs a little more work. |

Are you drunk? Do you work for SBS? Korean Herald? All three?
I think it was safe to assume from Satori's post that he means the decent 99.9999999 per cent of ESL teachers should not feel like losers. |

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha- yeah, I've written about that dude several times on the 'net. He's so notorious, he's become an Incheon legend... |

| Canadian girls that only date GIs teacher: Is invariably from a town with big rigs and mullets, likes Garth Brooks and James Taylor, has completely given up on dating ESL teachers and can always get you 20 pound turkeys off base at Christmas. Her kitchen is full of 40 oz. bottles of Smirnoff, Cuervo tequila and cheese and butter in English only packaging and she is obsessed with getting signed on post. Is convinced that one of the 18 year old soldiers from Tennessee is going to marry her, if only he didnt have two kids and a 300 pound wife already. Is usually carrying some cubic zirconia rock around with her from some helicopter mechanic. May have his name tattoed on her butt. Invariably disappears on Friday afternoons then is spotted on the dancefloor at the loft around 4 am on Saturday. Is so tired on Monday mornings that she passes out during her kindergarten class. Actually likes kids but thinks that its sad that they dont appreciate what these brave Americans have done for them. Cannot name the President of Korea, possibly not even the President of the US. Can say babo, saun sang nim and well thats it. Invariably calls home on Sundays for two or three hours, has a stack of phone cards three feet high. Is obsessed with her weight, but well when you compare her to the GI Janes in their size 44 Wrangler jeans she aint that bad. |

DYK stands for "Did You Know?"

Can you please write this phonetically? Please. |
Argh. Dee-Why-Kay.
You're welcome. |
But if you were pronouncing it as an acronym--like ASAP or FIFA--how would it sound then? |

Well I'm pretty sure it would sound rude.
Wait, were you one of those kids that asked their friends to say "O," "I" and then spell the word "CUP"? Can't remember the witty rejoinder that followed, but that was comedy GOLD. |

Given the intricate detail provided, Pyongshin seems to be thinking of someone in particular who he knew fairly well, or a composite of probably no more than two people he knew fairly well. Oddly enough, I do believe that I have actually met that person (or one of those two people) he's describing here. And no, eamo, unless they lied about their nationality to me, they were not American. I need see no further evidence that the person, or one of the persons PS is describing is the very person I met. What little I know meshes too perfectly. I would like to add, too, that the person I met was affable, outgoing and very friendly to me, though I was a complete stranger in that setting.
But once again, we have a description of an ex-pat type, not an ESL Teacher type. How did they work out as teachers, how were they to get along with as teachers, etc.? |

That was me my first year here, Mr. Korea!
(after what I'd read at Dave's in early 2002 I figured my first year would be best spent as far away from freaky foreigners as possible, easy to do at a small one-waygook hagwon in a small city of 50,000) |
