uploading pics:

upload your pics in a web-based photo hosting sites, like www.photobucket.com, then when you are done, make sure you resize your photos so they are not too large.

Then click the URL in the box that says IMG.. copy it and then paste it here and we will be able to see the photo.

HTH.

BTW, I don't think you can buy antibiotics OTC.

Almost a certainty your pill packet contains antibiotics -- they're prescribed for everything here. No you cant just buy them on your own.

Dont panic. Have a good sleep & hopefully you'll be starting to feel better in the morning.

Dont forget to consume lots of yogurt to counter the residual effects of the antibiotics.

Be well soon.

PostPosted: Mon Aug 21, 2006 5:30 am    Post subject: those packets of pills Reply with quote

Yes, the packets of pills thing is disconcerting to me, too.

Since we got here in June, I went to the skin doctor once, and got a shot and pills, too. My baby girl has been to the ears, nose and throat doc five times and to the pediatrician four times. My wife has been several times as well.

I can tell you based on this experience, that Korean doctors DO give antibiotics, at the drop of a hat. If a doc looked at your throat and asked you to say "aa," then the doc saw your strep and almost certainly gave an antibiotic.

Every time one goes to see a doctor, the doctor gives a prescription. My wife always stops at the yak gook (pharmacy) in the basement and gets those weirdly mysterious packets of pills. For the baby, we get some kind of powders that we have to mix with some liquid stuff.

It is all generic. It comes in generic packaging and I don't know for the life of me what the stuff is. I ask my wife and sometimes she knows it is antibiotic and sometimes she knows it is "allergy medicine."

All I can say is that after taking these medicines everyone in my family has gotten well! They don't give goofball medicines as far as I can tell.

I would assume too that your packet has penicillin in it, based on an experience I had my first year here...

When I got sick my hogwan boss went to the doctor and brought me a huge pack of pills and told me to take them. (I don't usually take medicine when I'm sick unless it's really bad, and I knew all I needed was a full day of rest so I hadn't wanted to go to the doctor.) I'm allergic to penicillin so I refused but he aggressively insisted and started to actually make me feel bad, like I was insulting him by not taking them. For some reason he couldn't understand that if one of those pills contained penicillin and I took it, I would die! Finally after a while of arguing, my ex-bf convinced him to call the doctor and ask if there was any penicillin in the pills- turns out there was. I'm glad I didn't let myself trust too much or get bullied into taking them, or else I wouldn't be here today!

Now that I've been here for a while I know I should've just accepted the pills and flushed them down the toilet, but I didn't understand the concept of losing face back then...

Maybe your pills don't have as large a dose as the ones you took before...?

Similar thing happened to me. I went to the doctor, blah blah blah. Anyways, I told him I was allergic to penicillin (had a letter written in Korean saying that) and then he gave me some medicine. It was penicillin. Needless to say, it got worse before it got better. I was pretty angry, but whatever, I am not deathly allergic to it. I don't take medicine from doctors now unless I am dying. Laughing

Are you an English speaker (if you are, did you graduate??) or a Korean looking for some help with your English writing?

PS. To answer your question - You CANNOT get antibiotics over the counter in Korea. You require a doctors prescription.

Where are you? If you are closer, I am sure Pusan has some English speaking hospitals and might be better.
Ya, the spelling thing was a low blow, your post was bad, but I didn't think anything of it as you were obviously sick. Still, your retort wasn't much better. Just ignore them.

Good Hospitals in Seoul:
Yonsei Severance by Yonsei U Campus in Sinchon. Great facilities probably the #1 or #2 hospital in Korea. Good Foreigner clinic there.

Samsung Hospital in Kangnam is good too, probably #1 or #2.
