Chameleon N.Korean Spy Nabbed in Seoul
The National Intelligence Agency has arrested a reprobate North Korean spy named Jeong Kyung-hak (4 it says entered South Korea on a forged Thai passport on three occasions between 1996 and 1998, taking photos of strategic sites including nuclear power plants, radar stations and U.S Forces Korea bases. It was the first arrest in nine years of a spy sent directly from North Korea since the spy couple Choi Jung-nam and Kang Yeon-jung in 1997.
Jeong was nabbed on his fourth visit to South Korea on July 27, this time on a fake Filipino passport. The NIA charged him under the National Security Law and seized the passport, other forged documents and US$3,188 in cash.
Prosecutors say they found Jeong is a spy under the 35th office of the North's Workers' Party and took pictures of nuclear power plants in Uljin, air force radar stations in Cheonan, the USFK base in Yongsan, Seoul and the Ministry of Defense in Seoul. Jeong also unsuccessfully tried to photograph Cheong Wa Dae twice in March 1996. He started his operations in Southeast Asia in July 1993 and changed his identities four times, from Bangladeshi to Thai, Chinese and Filipino.
The NIA told the national Assembly on Monday it found out about Jeong while questioning a North Korean defector in 1999 and launched a secret investigation to find him. The 35th office is the Party organization in charge of South Korean affairs along with the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland and said to be in charge of intelligence operations against South Korea in third countries. It was behind the shooting down of a KAL airliner in 1987 and the Rangoon bombing. A North Korean agent who was sent to the South with fake documents identifying him as a Filipino professor of Islamic Studies named Muhammad Kansu also belonged to the 35th office, it said. |
When will this government figure out that the North has little to no interest in peace? |

They used to have the coolest spy-catching informant line posters on the subways, do they still have them?
I liked the campaign that had "you can tell them by their tails", they had nice graphics. |

| It was really interesting being around in the late 90's. The Norks would send down teams of armed infiltrators. The people in the area were of course a bit stirred up, but everyone else went on as if it were no big deal. Pretty much parallel to how everyone seems to feel about the Norks having nukes: It doesn't directly affect me, so why worry? |

They only arrested a "Northerner." Some misguided "Northerner" was caught.

The Unification Ministry would be a perfect place for a Nork spy. They are all pro nork fuckers in that ministry. Man, the GNP will have a lot of cleaning up to do, hopefully they abolish that piece of shit minstry once and for all. |

| The conditions the spies from way back are kept in are atrocious, according to Michael Breen. |

Presumably "You're under arrest." -- whatever that is in Korean. |

Yeah I read that book too, but what I'm interested in is how they're treated now, what with the present governement doing everything they can to get Kim to let the sunshine in (one of my favourite Yangpa articles... thanks for the many laughs Kermo!) |

Spies should be executed. Tortured first. |
