The Korean government will dispatch troops to southern Lebanon, the battleground of recent Israeli attacks on Hezbollah strongholds, as part of a UN peacekeeping force, Seoul said Monday. The scope is under discussion.
A government official said Korea's contribution to UN peacekeeping forces stands at a mere 30 troops as of this month. "Considering Korea's status in the UN, it is almost inevitable for Korea to send troops to Lebanon," he said. Given the volatility of the region, the government is inclined to sending military engineers and medics instead of combat troops. Korea has previously sent troops to Somalia in 1993 and to East Timor, but it has now only 10 soldiers acting as observers in the cease-fire between India and Pakistan, seven observers performing similar duties in Sudan and others elsewhere, bringing the total to some 30.
The UN has said that it will increase peacekeeping forces in Lebanon from 2,000 to 15,000, and has asked member countries send troops. |
Personally, I think it is a good thing. I think any experince will make the ROK forces stronger. |

All branches of the Korean military have been participating in UN PKOs (Peacekeeping Operations) and acting as UNMOs (UN Military Observers)for some time now. (Contributing UNMOs to particpate in MNF Observer Duty and standing up units for PKO duty is just one of the responsibilities of all UN member states.)
Korea's first real-world experience in a UN-sanctioned PKO was in the summer of 1993 when they sent a ROK Army detachment to Somalia to support humanitarian operations in Mogadishu. Ever since then, the ROKs have been present either as a PKO force, MNF observers all over the world.
Currently, the ROKs have contributed forces to UN operations in the Western Sahara, the Georgian Republic, the Kashmir border between Pakistan and India, East Timor, and Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan. At the moment they have some 29 UNMOs performing MNF observer duty in hotspots all around the world such as the Georgian Republic, the Kashmir border, the Golan Heights, etc.

And of course, we shouldn't overlook the ROKs contribution to OIF in the form of the Zaytun Brigade stationed in the Kurdish area of Arbil, in Northern Iraq, even though it isn't UN-sanctioned.

Or.....until those wimpish battalions in Iraq pull out, they're going to keep provoking terrorists. Maybe a little less of the USA USA! |

there werent any americans in Baghdad on 9/11, or during the Japanese subway gas attacks, i think terrorism was going along quite healthily before the USA went to Iraq. Haven't had any successful attacks on the USA since...
I'd much rather have the terrorists die in Iraq than crashing planes into buildings in the US. |
