The mistake on a high-profile, slick advertising campaign lead commercial does make the company seem a bit:
"AM-I-SHE.... GAY-E-WHY"
(imagine a Korean voice)
You gotta laugh or cry sometimes. |

Well....it still doesn't make it ok to be wrong!! Just because the target audience is Koreans and not white english teachers, doesn't justify being wrong. Gonna' have to come up with a lot stronger point than who the target audience is to convince me that it's ok to completely butcher it. And I realize that in the grand scheme of things, and in the grand scheme of life, it ultimately doesn't affect your life or mine. It's just an observation about a stupid commercial with someone that doesn't care enough to make it correct.

You're not understanding mashimaro's point, methinks.
Koreans tend to mispronounce English, generally speaking, in all the same ways. At all the English camps I've ever done, and I've done a bunch, students always tend to mimic (sp?) each others' bad pronunciation. They say "Engrishee" and "ranguidgee" (language) with abandon. It almost seems to become a cool thing to do. Even the students with above-average pronunciation end up speaking that way. It's kinda contagious.
So it's the same thing with these ads. The say "Rush and Cashee" cuz that's how most Koreans pronounce it. |

Hanson, I understand you and Mashimaro's point. I just wish that they would try a little harder to actually pronounce it right instead of pronouncing it incorrectly like you say because, "It's almost become a cool thing to do." I've been here for a long time and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I feel ya'. I guess I should probably start a different thread to address my issues with the music scene here. Anyway, thanks for the replies, just don't forget that those people that made those commercials got paid a LOT OF MONEY to bastardize English,....on purpose.

Did you guys hear the new "THC" commercial? 
(I'm from near Vancouver so I can be forgiven for thinking automatically of the cannabis connection: the active ingredient in marijuana! you don't have to be a user to know that!)
Turns out the second time I heard the t.v. commercial I got to the screen in time to see the 'DHC' sign.... another high-profile, high-budget commercial with a sound discrepancy, though this time just trying to say the alphabet not sing a song.
Kindergarten students can pronounce English better than these t.v. bigwigs. 
(okay, not as funny. but still... a bit humorous) |

basplar has many right arguments: it gives me goosebumps to watch tv/commercials on tv that almost strictly uses an english theme i.e.music, slogans...etc but they really put no emphasis on doing it right.
i know that most ppl here on dave's, being esl teachers and trying to teach correct pronunciation to kids and even adults, must find it hard to grasp that the MEDIA of all things are the worst offenders. it's not ok to say something wrong just bc everyone else says it that way.
i constantly got my telly on since i dont have a room mate or a pet to talk to and must endure all the fine commercials. granted they are interesting, funny and even creative to look at but a torture to listen to.
I like to watch the O-shee-N channel when all the korean movie stars endorse it. i like to watch the cute girl who keeps telling me to Lush-and-Cash it. I like the ballerinas who tell me about x-speed-uh. its even entertaining to watch the 2 Lemonad-uh guys serenade the same girl.
i'm not mocking the industry, i'd like to help them, coach them, hired on as a consultant and make the big bucks. isn't that the dream of many of us to land a nice english/teaching/coaching/consulting job besides working in schools or hogwans? |

All this reminds me of an ad that was on back in the good old days when I had cable TV (i.e., last year.)
It involved a Western-sounding woman saying the name of the product, and then instead of saying "Magic" like the words on the screen, she distinctly says "Sky. It's Massic." Can't remember the product, but I can still hear that weird phrase echoing through my brain. |

That's the upshot. But it takes some of the fun out of it, makes it seem a bit irritating. I prefer to be pleasantly surprised with every new gaff. |
