I was thinking about bringing my dog over to Korea. Does anyone have any experience with this? How are the landlords with animals in their apartments? Cost to fly the animal over, quarantine/vaccination requirements, etc.? My employer apparently owns the building I will be in and I will be going over first before I discuss the possibility of having a dog in the apartment. It's a two bedroom that I have to myself (at least that's what I been told and I had them put that in the contract). I should add that it's a pretty big dog (Lab). Any advice/help would be appreciated. Thanks.[/img]

I'm taking my dogs to Korea in December, and no one is going to give me any grief about it because we own the building. I haven't done any research, but I do know that if you use that search function-you will find some answers....good luck and hope to play some ball with your dog someday.

I heard that you should put a bike lock (with key strapped to the side of the kennel) when you take him on the plane so no one takes him out to play with him (they can't go after them once they're out on the runway) etc.

I think it's like 200 bucks a dog for the flight.

Shot records (shots need to be given at least a month before you leave)

Found what I was looking for...

Quote:
... i've actually been told by quite a few people to lock the kennel to

1) avoid having airline crew think "oh cute dog, i'll open the kennel to pet it" and

2) I've heard that sometimes the door can come open, due to turbulence, people, or a faulty door. a few dogs have gotten loose on the jetway and gotten lost this way- once they're out there people aren't allowed to go out after them. i know someone who lost a whippet this way just last summer, so i didn't want to take any chances.

Immigration and quarantine are very easy. You need up to date shots and rabies vaccination. That's it. No quarantine period usually.

Make absolutely sure, in specific terms, that your boss knows you are bringing a large dog and that it's okay for the apartment. Get it in writing if you can. There seem to be a lot of ads from people here trying to ditch their dogs because the landlord suddenly has a problem with dogs.

Your main problem will be your hours. You will likely be gone 6-10 hours 5-6 days a week. For a big dog in a small apartment, it can be difficult (though certainly doable).

Check with your airline for exact regulations for flying your pet. It may not be possible during the summer months when it's so hot.

Good luck.

i actually looked into this a little (sadly i don't have the site bookmarked where i read this) - i found a stray the week before i left, and considered bringing her along. the one thing i learned was that your pet needs to have its rabies shot at least 30 days prior to departure - if you get it done any closer to departure time, the animal will have to remain in quarantine until the 30 days have passed. i didn't want my little dog to have to sit in a kennel for 30 days (since i'd just found her and gotten her shots then), so she stayed with my family in the states.

I'm coming to Korea to teach in October. My husband will follow in Dec. with the kitty (Bob-cat the mankiller) and Wolfman Jack (the big ball of puppy love). They have their shots and the other requirements except the final health certificate (have to get that within 10 days of departure). The thing I can't figure out is the quarantine. Some sites say minimum 10 days, other say one day if the pet is healthy (both of ours are thankfully). Does anyone know the truth about quarantine? And also, does anyone know the cost? We're doing our budget and need to have an idea.

Thanks a ton,
Rachel

And because they're so darn cute I'm attaching pictures of each.

Apparently the answer is, "usually there's no quarantine". It's just that my husband will go nuts if the cat has to be quarantined...

Thank you, they're not only cute but extremely lovable. Especially my dog...(the cat is my husbands).

Thanks,
Rachel

"Leave them/it at home. They have them here.... in restaurants."

I'm not worried about that.

Unlike some people I'm a good pet parent. Our cat is an indoor cat and the dog doesn't go out unless he's with me on a leash.

Besides, where I go, Jackaroo goes. That dog would die if I went away with out him. I'm really worried about the fact that I'm going to Korea in October and my husband/pets are following in December. Poor Jackaroo's gonna pine the whole time.

He's sitting her with his head in my lap right now... oh... and now he's smelling my armpit. What is THAT?

so just out of curiousity has anyone brought their dog over that could tell me if the long flight from the states traumatized their dog and how they might be adjusting to korea?

If you lose your dog in Korea don't expect to get 'em back. There's a very real possibility of torture and death and dinner in its future. Seriously.

Take care 24/7. This is NOT a big dog friendly country.

My dog has been to the states and back. She's kind of hyper when she gets out of the cage and she smells terrible, but after a day she's fine. Just buy a cage big enough for your dog to move around a big. Ours is much bigger than our dog actually needs, but it allows her enough room to walk around a big. DOn't worry about it!
