Hi, everyone -
I'm new here, so, er, hello. I'm getting the teaching/travelling bug, and I'd like to move to South Korea. Could someone give me an opinion about any of these smaller-sized cities?
I realized that no place is perfect, but I would like to avoid heavy pollution, HUGE cities, and cities with a military base.
How are these?
1. Boryeong (pop. 110,380)
2. Mokpo (245,000)
3. Samcheok (76,316)
4. Sacheon (114, 556)
5. Donghae (103,115)
6. Chuncheon (252,019)
7. Yeosu (320,570)
8. Jinju (339,943)
9. Changwon (229,869)
10. Sokcho (89,461)
Thanks! |

Mokpo, Donghae and Changwon all have military bases. (Changwon technically doesn't, but the base is just over the hill.) |

I don't like the city of Mokpo. Nothing charming or interesting about it, imo, having been there five times, each time for only a half day or so, mostly passing through, because it is nicely located in terms of regional islands and coastal sights to go see. But Mokpo the city? underwhelming and nondescript. No bad, just a big blah.

8. Jinju (339,943) - I am working in a small town close to Jinju because I like the city, its river park, it's a perfect size imo, and with cheap express buses to big city shoppin' Busan, coastal Tongyeong and Namhae and hiking Jiri National park, all within an hour's distance.
9. Changwon (229,869)- a modern planned city with lots of neat two-storey brick houses instead of ubiquitious high-rise apartments, Changwon is clean, new, with lots of sports facilities and transportation best done by car or scooter, both cheap and easy to get here.
7. Yeosu (320,570)- ah, my third choice from the list you provided, would be number one if it wasn't so far from a major city, smack in the middle of the south coast (nice location). That said, airfare is cheap here and flights to Busan or Seoul could be done once a month for under a hundred bucks, so no need to sweat the distance. Love Yeosu. Clean air, nice ocean vistas, perhaps a bit less hip than modern Changwon or bigger cities, but it's my speed.
4. Sacheon (114, 556)
Good location, nothing special |
These four cities in the south I recommend. One good thing is the winters are real mild down here, with snow minimal to nonexistent compared to the snowstorms and bitter cold winds in the central and northern part of the country.

6. Chuncheon (252,019) - Nice city, cute parks, reminds me of Changwon in terms of benefit of having a car or scooter. Chuncheon, though is way up north, smack in the middle of the path of the asian sandstorms in the spring, so air quality is VERY bad, compared to the southeast coast, which gets almost no sandstorms in comparison.
10. Sokcho (89,461) - northeast coast city is ideally located for enjoying the outdoors, with mountains, beaches, valleys, all the splendour of the province of Gangwondo. |
These two cities in the northeast are the ONLY cities in the northern half of South Korea that I've thought I could see myself living in.
Love the oreo.
Good luck whatever. |

Why, a small city? It might be somewhat boring, though, I have heard you get a more immersed experience....
I might say Sokcho, not sure how available teaching positions are, but you are close to the beach......lol
Didn't TC live out that way...too bad they banned him... |

I'm not sure where you got the population numbers from, and indeed they can be hard to ascertain, but here is a site that seems useful
http://www.citypopulation.de
Choose a country and check it out.
(Changwon listed as having 517,577 people ... how could they be so exact?)
Ah, apparently it's from the end of 2002.

If you're going to live in a small city, I'd recommend Cheongju. It's a small university town that has a deceptively great music scene. |

If you can't find the city info you need here, then try Galbijim. Not all of the city articles are busting at the seams with info, yet, but we're working on that, as in the collective effort currently going on for Anyang.
As for the list that you're working with, I'd take Changwon. The best civil engineering job in the country was done to make that place laid out well. Almost like you're driving back in the West, at times. It's also right near the sea and a short hop to Busan. |

I live in Sokcho and highly recommend it. Great climate, if you can stand the colder winters, skiing, snowboarding minutes from downtown, a few nice beaches, better further north with less people. A nice waygook community, small town atmosphere, no pollution.
Also, Sorak-san, the most wonderful, visually stunning place that I have ever been in Korea. Keep in mind, I have not been everywhere on the peninsula, but I have got around a bit.
Beware though, western amenites are fairly few, no Mcdonalds or other chain resturaunts, except for pizza hut and Dominos.
However, if you want real Korea with some really friendly locals, the kind who offer you cups of tea and crab when you stop by just to look at the fish tanks, this is a great place to live.
One thing about it being a small town though, jobs are tougher to get, most people here have been here two-three or even eight or nine years. |

You have to think about population density too. I live in a city with an advertised pop. of XXX,XXX, but that is spread out over a HUGE rural area. The actual city proper is about XX,XXX....1 quarter, maybe. |

As for the cities, I can't be much help exept to say that a Korean friend moved down to Changwon from Seoul recently and wanted us to go with him. He loves it. |
