Has anyone had experience writing for any of the English language Korean papers or stringing for western media? I am headed to Korea in a few weeks to try my hand at freelancing and havent secured any work thus far. If anyone has advice or wants to share their experience I would be appreciative.
Thanks

Jay

If you have degrees in journalism or creative writing, then you can get your foot in the door.

IF you have experience as a journalistic writer (other than your college paper) to go with the journalism degree then you have a leg up.

The rest depends on networking. It is ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW and who knows you. As a newbie, you won't know anyone.

If you have no experience and no degree, then you may be able to sell a few pieces to the paper back home.

I wish you the best of luck.

There was an Irish guy here a year or so back who went for it. Connor, I think his name was: posted on here under the name "saharzie".Take my hat off to him, I think he actually did a stint with the times here and got a fairbit published, although i doubt he made much money (as is often the case with journos). If I were you I'd find his homepage and mail him for advice?

The Korea times is welcoming contributions here:

i had a piece published with them last year actually.

thanks for the advice guys

I do have experience, I was a producer for a cable channel in NYC for awhile and wrote for some websites.
I guess my best bet is to really hit the pavement, CV in hand, once I arrive.
all the best

http://english.ohmynews.com/ is founded on citizen journalism and has published Korean expat contributions before. Also, Korea Herald's Life and Community section seems to use almost everything that you send. Hell, they even used stuff of mine. Confused
