Grotto makes an excellent and irrefutable point.

Why work for poor wages and poor schedules when better wages and better schedules are available?

Soviet man....when has a company transfered its profits onto the salaries of its employees???

Except in the case of bonuses for employees of course.

So by what rationale should a teacher expect more because he or she worls for a big profitable company??

Just curious here...

Also, ECC is a decent first job for new and relatively inexperienced teachers. Evaluationg an ECC job when you have experience is ridiculous as it no longer really applies to experienced teachers...consider it an entry-level position for new teachers.

Homer, I argue that YBM lowers the bar for everyone.

It charges tuition fees that are far higher than the average (to the point of price gouging) and its staff are quite possibly the lowest-paid in Korea.

Not many people could afford 23 million won a year, per child, in tuition.

Then you have some of YBM's business divisions such as "YBM Cabin Crew Academy" being a complete sham. Designed purely to suck people in with false promises. I mean: check-cleared, congratulations you are now a "YBM flight attendant" (and too bad that no real airline will ever hire you).

YBM ELS: 2.0-2.4 mil a month with split-shifts and no housing. Great, until you realize how much an officetel in Gangnam is going to cost in rent per month.

YBM ECC: Contracts being issued with disastrous pay as low as 1.6 mil (up until last year) at company-owned branches. Frequently on split shifts + Saturdays.

Even as a first year job, I think from all the evidence YBM would be a really exploitative place to work.

I just received a call from the one in Chungdam offering me 2.3 and single housing. But, something is wrong because they need me to fly over there ASAP. They need someone for September 1st. The director told me someone was supposed to come, but he was in a car accident and he can't come for 2 months, so now she REALLY needs a teacher. I have 4 years experience and I have people like this still trying to pull a fast one on me. I don't THINK so!!!

Another perspective. Did you know the owner of YBM is a billionaire? Made all his money from English. Things have gotta change. It's should be nothing more than a school subject.

YBM is charging up to 23 million won per student (per year) to attend "Korea International School" (which is owned and run by YBM in Bundang).

That is almost 2 million won per month, per kid, in tuition fees.

http://www.kis.or.kr/admission/adm04.asp

At the same time, they are running advertisements on daves to recruit teachers for YBM on as low as 1.8 per month.

No YBM sympathizer could defend that.

This tuition at kis is in line with what you would pay at most international schools (especially those with nice, new facilities).

SFS here in Seoul is around the same price (pdf link):

http://extranet.sfs.or.kr/public_docs/TuitFeeSchedule0607.pdf

That being said, I don't have any proof of what teachers at either school actually take home, let alone their comprehensive packages. I think it would be unfair to assume that ybm is paying less than sfs without evidence. I would find 1.8 to be quite a low number for someone working in either of these establishments, but if that is the case then there must be some draw to working there. A lot of the teachers there are well-qualified, experienced teachers.

ECC Eunpyung - It's locally owned. A few years ago it was blacklisted by a native speaker who was in management. The owner's wife managed the school for 14 years while he had a separate career. After the number of students dropped by 2/3 and several teachers fled, she dropped out and her husband took over. He's everything she's not. He also has a new head teacher, who is much more fluent than the last one. So the school appears to have entered a new chapter in its history. But there are still serious problems. So approach with caution. More later. PM me.

As far as holding out for a little higher, the time you spend job hunting and negotiating, you're unemployed. That eats up your slightly higher salary and then some. They offered me 1.9 and I went with it for that very reason. Another teacher here just completed a year contract at 1.8. She agreed to stay another 6 months when they offered her 2.0. How much people in management make, I don't know.

One of the Korean teachers, who has been teaching English for 10 years, told me why she likes ECC: They provide the curriculum. At other schools where she's taught, the textbook changes with the teacher. ECC curriculum is neither terrific nor terrible.

By the way, there is no accent, age, or race discrimination at this branch.

As I've said in other threads, YBM does troll Dave's ESL for comments about their company (as does Pagoda).

I suspect almost all hogwan chains do this- maybe almost all hogwans.

I just don't understand how they think they can pull crap like this on someone who's been here 4 years. Sure, I was offered single housing and 2.3 last night, but the lady wanted me there in just a few days. I smell a BIG rat!!! Everyone out there should be wary of ANY school that needs you here yesterday. Something is just wrong, wrong, wrong with a place like that.

Does it really matter? Even if they fire you for posting something negative, there are a lot of other places(Taiwan / Japan / the entire middle east) to make money in. That's IF they say you can't work in Korea, which would be a lot of work for them. Plus, who would want to work for someone that's so paranoid they waste their time looking for posts on wesites?
