Yeah, it took me a little while to figure out that lola is a ude, but the song is such a catchy rocker that i wasn't paying attention.
But one song that i don't think I'll ever understand is Why Don't We Do it in the Road, by the Beatles. Too abstract for me. |

Yeah, I still don't get that one, but when I tell my doctor he just rolls his eyes and says it's a symptom of the brain damage I've suffered due to listening to Yoko Ono. |

"Higher"...I get it now!
If you've got a beat or bass line that mesmerizes me, it doesn't matter what the lyrics are... |

It took me a long time to get The Grateful Dead.
I had serious issues with people who'd otherwise listen to Nirvana.
The music was incongruent.
Bottom line: The Dead embodied this "Druggie" culture at college, but those who loved them weren't really exploring other folk-blues influences. Rather, they were embracing Phish.
When my turn came for "the culture", it was more Ween and Adrian Sherwood's Dub Syndicate recordings.
I had to wash my hands of all that hype before I could apprciate the Dead for what they were: magnificent improv working off a solid canon of lyrics written by and large by Robert Hunter, who was not a musician in the band.
It all started with "Ripple".
Then Franklin's Tower and Eyes of the World.
And this awesome website:
http://arts.ucsc.edu/Gdead/AGDL/
And similarly, I did eventually get into Phish and Nirvana once it wasn't being force-fed to me. |

When I was a little girl in Girl Guides (sort of like Girl Scouts) I think was the only kid was outraged by the Beatles quote in the Guide handbook:
"I get by with a little help from my friends."
Did no one pay attention to the next line?
Anyway, the song I STILL don't get is the Bob Marley classic "No Woman No Cry." I was listening to it today, and I thought of a third interpretation to those mysterious four words.
Theory #1
No, Woman, No Cry
i.e., Woman, do not cry.
The line "Oh, little darlin', don't shed no tears" lends some credence to this interpretation.
Theory #2
No Woman: No Cry.
i.e., If you do not have a woman, this will save you some grief.
Theory #3
No Woman? No Cry!
i.e., If you do not have a woman, do not cry.
Which do you think it is? |

I've never really enjoyed anything by The Grateful Dead but then...I've never been to one of their gigs and it was a long way before my time. From my understanding I would have probably appreciated them more if I was involved in some of the acid tests etc. of the time. Without experiencing the context it makes a weaker impression on me.
Love the idea of what they, and the significant others around them, did though. |

For years I thought the song "Secret Agent Man" was "Secret Asian Man". And I kept thinking, "Why does this guy have to keep the fact that he's Asian secret?"
Led Zepplin in general. I just could not figure out why it was so cool. Then my husband (before we were married) got me drunk and played "Been a Long Time Since We Rock n' Rolled" at full volume on a pristine set of Klipsch studio monitors from the late '70's. Then I got it. Now I love it.
NIN. I still don't get it.
Grateful Dead. Still don't get it. Learn when to end a song!!! Arrggghhh! Hippies!
The Eels- My Beloved Monster, I still don't get this one. I can't figure out if it's about his dog, his woman or his kid. Give me your opinion.
My Beloved Monster and Me
We go everywhere together.
Wearing a raincoat that has four sleeves
Gets us through all kinds of weather.
She will always be the only thing.
That comes between me and the awful sting.
That comes from living in a world that's so damn ... mean
My Beloved Monster is tough!
If she wants she will disrobe you.
But if you lay her down for a kiss,
Her little heart it could explode.
Hhe will always be the only thing.
That comes between me and the awful sting.
That comes from living in a world that's so damn... mean
La La La La La La La La
I think it's his woman, my husband thinks its his dog. |

Most Bob Dylan songs still make no sense to me.
I figure he was high most of the time when he wrote and performed them.
Or, he was trying to be poetical somehow, and who can understand that *beep* anyway?
Still love his work though. |
