Just wondering what kind of style you use when you are teaching your university classes.

By style I mean the following:

1. presentation - you make a powerpoint of the work you want to do for that class

2. book only - you go in with the teacher's book and the student's book and you just teach it from them.

3. somewhere in between.

Are there alternatives??

We have pretty minimal classroom facilities - a chalkboard at best. Sometimes students want to give presentations in Ppt. so we have to schedule booking a room with such facilities. Otherwise, a Ppt. is not flexible enough for a straightforward English lesson imo. Paper and brain cells lead the way...

I use the book and heavily supplement with my own materials including games that I have made and had professionally printed. I don't use powerpoint because I think it pretty much sucks.

Interestingly I am teaching a presentations skills class this semester so will have to bite the bullet and use it, but only a little. I am having my students do presentations without powerpoint for the first 2/3 of the semester so they can concentrate on what really matters - content, body language, eye contact and organization.

Books, movies (short clips), some powerpoint (limited use), interactive activities when possible....mix and match really.

I write because I want my students to write. When presented with power point, too many students would just like the frames e-mailed out or posted. Not going to happen, at least not in an ESL classroom. I want to see notebooks getting filled.

Handouts, supplementary reading, games, activities, video...whatever to fill in the blanks around a boring text that we don't choose.

I used to teach a travel/culture class and with over 100 students, i had to use powerpoint (but never gave copies of the presentations to the students). With my smaller classes; its pretty material i put together myself, loosely based on the topic of the crappy textbook.

I have 3 hour classes with my students, so I use Interchange for the first hour, handouts for the second and roll play for the third.
