I'm not *quite* to the point of wanting to get a dog, but I'm starting to be in the market (har har har).
I'm really torn between getting a pure-breed shipped here, and adopting a mutt here. I worked with mutts at the ASPCA back in the states, but I'm wondering if these herds of strays that I see are as different from my version of a 'dog' as barn cats are from house cats. Has generations of being pretty much ferral caused these dogs to be more agressive or unfriendly towards humans. (I intend to get a puppy, not a grown dog, so I'm not talking about learned behaviors.) I realize that, since they're mutts, their character traits are going to differ greatly from dog to dog.
I'm wondering though if there's anything in particular I should know about the mutts here in Korea? Any major health issues with inbreeding? How hard is it to get the dog back to the states if I keep health records?
I see a lot of these dogs that look a bit like variations of mini-huskies, but they're white. Is there any type of dominant breed that tends to be seen a lot?
And for the last part of my question... how exactly would I go about getting a mutt if that's what I chose to do? I mean... do I just walk down the street, spot a puppy and offer someone money for it? Are there rescue organizations that would be able to put me in contact with people who have puppies? |

Why only a puppy? Many adult dogs are wonderful too. How could you even consider paying someone to breed more dogs who will take homes away from homeless dogs, if you've worked with homeless dogs before? As many people on these boards have pointed out, you shouldn't consider getting any dog unless you're very stable and can make a lifetime commitment ... but if you can, of course you have to adopt one who needs a home.

Yes, they're all perfect and need homes! I don't think you have any reason to be concerned about "feral" dogs ... many of the homeless dogs here were previously part of someone's family and got discarded for some reason unrelated to temperament. Often people just don't plan ahead and consider their lifestyle when deciding to get a dog.

All kinds of health problems exist in purebreds as well as other dogs. You never know what will happen. Always be prepared for the worst.

Not too hard if you have proof of vaccination, I think ... but I'm sure the Americans can provide more details.

No!!! This only supports irresponsible people who breed indiscriminately for a quick buck.

You must be talking about the breed Jindo.
Wikipedia does a better job of explaining where they come from than I could. |

If you have your heart set on a Jindo or other particular breed, I'm sure you can find one at a shelter or through a rescue group. Many of these dogs need homes too. |

I adopted a Jindo mix from a rescuer on this board. The dog has been so sweet and loyal it's unbelievable. He's a bit shy around people but never mean to anyone. Despite him stealing my sandals chance he gets, he's a great dog. |
