This is a strange post I know, but just out of interest...

As a boy my family had a very old fireguard, with the family crest carved intricatley over it. Around the edge the family motto was "Manners maketh man". ie.. a person should be judged to have worth on how well they behave, not how much money or how well they dress.

So does anyone else have a family motto" or is that just way too old fashioned?

Much too proletariat to have a heraldic crest, but a mantra Mum used to repeat, with Dad nodding somberly everytime...

"Life wasn't meant to be easy..."

Good times.

PS

"ne illigitimi te carborundum"

"Don't let the bastards get you down?"

We have lots!

#1 (Taken from a humourous notepad) Don't Let The Turkeys Get You Down
#2 (Solemnly mispronounced by Baby Kermo and her sister) Love Your Chuthers
#3 (Because she is a tender-hearted lady) Be Nice To Mom
#4 (A sharp rebuke from Sister #2 to Mom as she ate her dinner with Sister #3 in her lap) Don't Get Crumbs On The Baby!

We even have a song! We just heard it on the CBC one day as we were driving (while Mom was out of town) and adopted it. It's got a haunting Irish melody, and words that send a chill down my spine when sung lustily:

O Lord above,
Send down your dove,
With beaks as sharp as razors.

To cut the throats
Of them there blokes
What sells bad beer to sailors.

Me (to my family): Hey Everyone. What's the motto?
Family:
Nothing's wrong. What's the motto with you?

....I know, I know, absolutely terrible pun. But I couldn't resist! Cool

My family has a very old motto which has lasted generations.

"As soon as you're 18, you're out the door!"

"right is right and wrong is wrong"

and a bunch of lesser quip directives, like, for instance, "nobody in, nobody out" (when the doors and windows are locked for the night)

"MOLON LABE" (mo-lone lah-veh)

Quote:
When Leonidas was preparing to make his stand, a Persian envoy arrived. The envoy explained to Leonidas the futility of trying to resist the advance of the huge Persian army and demanded that the Spartans lay down their arms. Leonidas told Xerxes "MOLON LABE",or "Come And Get Them."

"Our archers are so numerous,"said the envoy, "that the flight of their arrows darkens the sun."
"So much the better,"replied Dienekes, a Spartan warrior, "for we shall fight them in the shade."
