... at the behaviour of hangookins/waygookins in hongdae?

holy smokes! i've been living in the country-side over the past 8 months, as kind of an experiment --kind of a self-inflicted immersion program-- and haven't had much contact with foreigners for quite a while.

my friend from canada came to visit, and on his last day here we went to hongdae. millions of people. thousands of drunken foreigners. we went to the tinpan. my buddy gets socked in the face by a GI while waiting in line in the bathroom. my buddy's passive; he didn't react at all and in fact apologized to the GI (for doing nothing). tequila. wasted foreigners. k-girls all over the place. music so bloody loud conversation ain't possible. it reminded me of that scene in "fear and loathing in las vegas" when johnny depp's acid trip is kicking in while him and the samoan are in the casino.

debauchery: i'm all for it, love it to death, but it seems these hongdae-ins are doing it all wrong. bloody disgusted i was. i'm convinced my immersion experiment has turned out to be successfull.

Imagine that, in Korea of all places. Wink

Well, what you have explained is to be expected in an area where 90% of the people are drunk.

That description of Hongdae doesn't match my experience.

Maybe the OP has never been to a genuinely wild bar/club area. Compared to where I come from, Itaewon and Hongdae are extremely tame.

I remember about two summers ago it was a nice little haven. After the subways closed, there'd be no other foreigners around (at least not in the park). Now whenever I go to the park, it's at least 50% foreigners. I have to take some of the blame myself, having introduced some of the most disruptive foreigners to the park.

Ofcoirse it sucks. What do you expect with thousands of drunks around? Im glad Im married. I dont have the patience for that kind of scene anyway. Much rather have a conversation about photography or some other subject in a quiet place, or go to a gallery or just shoot and work on my photos.

Hongdae still has it's secret spots. However, the club scene is generally a pretty lame attempt at being different without actually having to be different.

Throw in some Glenn Miller Orchestra, some footage of cops beating up hippies, and you've got a perfect Saturday night line up. Wink

What do you expect in a big city where the attraction is the nightlife? Go to a rich area of Seoul if you want to have civilized chats over drinks.

I don't think you do like debauchery. That was debauchery and you didn't like it.

no. man, really, i like debauchery... i guess my own definition of it. i'm getting old... every one seemed so young, full of pomp and life, dancing at 80's tunes they've never even heard on the radio...

like i said i've been out of the city for 8 months. i used to frequent those places all the time my 2nd year here, but coming back to it was a shock, a trip. i thinking i'm turning koh-ree-an, i think i'm turning koh-ree-an, i really think so. i'm more into the korean idea of debauchery these days.

I'm not so much disgusted at the debauchery in Hongae as I am the racist attitude towards foreigners by Koreans there. This is true not only of the patrons, but also the door staff and bartenders. I find Hongdae to be one of the worst places to hangout in Seoul. It's no wonder so many foreigners, who have gotten past the whole "I think it's cool to say I hate Itaewon" midset, hangout there constantly.

It's called aging. You get older and you start to find less appreciation in that scene. I'm sometimes amazed when I think back to the days and what I found enjoyable. Where the hell did that woman hide my stroller?!
