As quite the Scrooge I would tend to normally say, how depressing is Christmas in your home country!!
One benefit of living in Korea is that you can kind of 'escape' Christmas. Christmas has become kind of overblown and way too much hassle where I come from.
I know what you mean though. I do miss being around my family at Christmas.
On the other hand....Bah! Humbug!!

I haven't been home for Christmas five years running.
On the bright side, I've been here for five Chuseoks.

now, pardon my ignorance, but is there a 'festive' season over there? I would also assume that we'll have to work on Dec. 25th? I'm a huge fan of Christmas man........ |

I don't think Santa comes here. Not enuff Gross National Product or whatnot. Kind of refreshing, actually....except for those lifesize robot santas that under the red velvet and plastic face probably look like the Terminator robot (just avoid Walmart in Korea 'til Christmas blows over).
So while folks at home watch tv shows about the 'meaning of Christmas' here in Korea, faced with the same puzzle looking at a dish of kimchi it just 'aint the same question somehow...'the meaning of kimchi', yes....
Feeling Christmassy already!

December is a day off, but since two-thirds of Koreans nationally aren't Christian, it's a very quiet day. I arrived a couple of days before then in 2002 and it was soo quiet where i was, and very quiet for three of the four I've spent here. |

Not trying to be a smartass, but there is a term for it in English: red letter day, as any fan of Buffalo Tom would know..
As for the depressing element, I'm with Eamo. I found the over-commercialization of the holiday to be topped in annoyance factor only by the people who try to make it seem like it's a Christian holiday. Every year, the same argument with the same luggards who think Thomas Edison invented Christmas right after he had dinner with Jesus.
I'm quite happy to be away from it. Though I do admit still clinging on to the fantasy of wearing a cashmere turtleneck and pleated brown corduroys while sipping some egg nog from a frosted cup with a miniature handle and wooing my father-in-law with talk of the stock market and my newest baby's most recent diaper explosion. |
