Most countries levy a tax on airfares, value added taxes, a fuel surcharge and depending on the country in question, a departure tax as well.

The percentage will vary but they are all marked on your paper ticket and are legit.

charging an airfare tax.

Airfare Tax: Of the total airfare cost, a tax (percentage varies depending on your salary) will be deducted from the first paycheck in accordance with Korean sales Tax regulations.

Charging airfare tax is not usually passed on to teachers. i love the part in your contract where it says 'in accordance with korean tax regulations' to make it all sound official.

It's a sign the school is looking for ways to screw you.

If it helps, here's the link the the Korean tax office, where you can e-mail questions:
http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/default.html

Had a brief look around the site, and didn't see anything about the airfare tax...my guess is that you might call them out on it, say that you would like to change the contract so the school will pay the tax...see what they say. But, perhaps not a good sign that they'd even obligate you to pay it...

Leave. If you stay, you should have a very good look at the rest of your contract.
