I have been waiting for this day.

After months of screwing me out of hundreds of thousands of won - airfare, overtime, insurance, etc............

He has just hired a new teacher from Australia. He just arrived- has no visa yet and has begun working. He knows that he is working illegally and has said to me that he is actually glad he has not signed a contract because he already hates it and doesnt want to end up screwed like me and my other co-workers.

SO- HOW DO I REPORT MY BOSS FOR HAVING AN ILLEGAL WORKER??!!

In trying to screw your boss over you will also be screwing the new guy over--who could get fined by immigration for being at work already. Wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

In ratting on your boss you'd be certainly be bringing your new co-worker's worst fears to fruition-- "getting screwed"--thanks to you.

Do you really want to have your new co-worker sucked up into your revenge thing against your boss?

Your illegal co-worker will also get fined, detained and deported and possibly blacklisted at immigration.

Your boss only faces a fine (or have to pay a bribe of almost equal value).

If you still want to make the report...
http://www.immigration.go.kr/indeximmeng.html
at the top of the page you will see the tab for "participation"
click that and you will see a sub tab "Report of immigration offence".

Let good judgement be your guide and NOT the opinions on this board.

I'm sort of mixed on what advice I want to give you. If the guy was a newbie and didn't realize he was working illegally, that would be horrid. The fact that he is doesn't make me feel much pity.

Still, I wouldn't do it. I would hope someone else would though Wink

Hmmmmmm.....interesting responses........not one of you seem to care about the law.........or maybe you do care a little but want to protect the new teacher more. Shouldnt the law superceed everything else? Even if I am doing it to get revenge.

New guy knows he is working illegally.

The law.........haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

This is Korea.

Most of us who have been here a while know that Koreans only refer to the law if it enables them to screw you over...otherwise it is to be ignored.

By all means, if you want to, report the guy. Why did you ask?

But don't be surprised if this somehow turns around and bites you in the arse later on. Confused

Uh, no. If you were honestly concerned about the parents or some other "victim", that would be one thing. But you are just spiteful. If you decide to make a report to immigration, I think you should warn your co-worker. It would be the fair thing since he hasn't done anything negative to you. Of course, then your boss may not get in much trouble, so I suppose it would miss the point.

There have been several threads discussing the morality of this issue - you should check them out if you are really interested in others' opinions.

In any case, I hope you let us know what happens. It's quite possible that you'll inadvertently get burned somehow if your boss has any pull.

I'll just say this. If this guys get caught working illegally, he'll be fined and given an exit order; or worse, he could be arrested and deported. Your boss on the other hand will get a small fine and just get another teacher. Since Jack public knows absolutely nothing about immigration or visas or illegal hagwon practices, I'm sure it's not difficult for your boss to spin it to the customers that he was the victim of a teacher who 'told him that he had a working visa and had a degree from Harvard'.

Who do you really think you're hurting here?

"I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice."
Abraham Lincoln

I wouldn't do it, this guy hasnt done anything to you personally, you hardly even know him, and well, like everyone else has said, the hogwon will get off scott free/ And he's already in a shitty situation, he hates the job after 2 days in a new country!! One thing is true - law and justice are definitely not the same thing!!

I'd tell the new teacher to go to immigration and report himself......immigration will not deport him if he makes the first move. Set the owner up for the fall. They'll have him return to school, teach and pop in suddenly.

Listening to people say that you shouldn't do it because it will hurt the foreigner makes me laugh. Most of foreign co-workers would give a rats anal orifice what happens to you. If the school starts screwing you over they won't come to your defence. Sure, they might pay lip service, but they will worry about themselves first, and let you fend for yourself most of the time.

Why should a person worry about someone who couldn't care what happened to them?

Why should a person protect someone who is KNOWINGLY breaking the law? Whether it is a law people agree with or not?
