How is it then ,that Israel is generally agreed to have "lost the war"??

That you seem to ask that question sincerely, shows how quantitatively, "object"ively, you view winner and loser..........

To address your question, "winning" and "losing" is not; about levels of casualties/lack of casualties, number of hits/lack of hits, level of destruction/lack of destruction, territory gained/territory lost. This might be right if you were playing a video game but may I remind you war (especially modern war) is played before a wide audience with much at stake.....

To address your question. Winning and losing is now about "morality" and doing things for the right reasons. Hearts and minds, as famously quoted in another context.......... This will always be debatable BUT the media will always put their nose on the side they think "hearts and minds" lean........

Vis a vis Israel -- simply, the media (rightfully I believe), thought IDF actions were immoral and excessive and just plainly, broadly punitive. Not the right thing .............. so they put their noses on this side. Rightfully, to show that Israel in some sense lost and was shamed.......

But yeah, if you want to see the world as a video game -- go back to your Risk game analysis....

Well, Junior, if I were one of the hundreds of innocent civilians slaughtered by Israeli hardware, I might have asked, "why didn't UNIFIL broadcast the troop movements louder."

I am one of those who think Israel 'lost', and my reasoning is by the measurement of goals and how close they seemed to being acheived, and idea that a draw- militarily, tactically- can translate to a strategic victory.
Hezbollah managed to acheive their goals- take on the Israeli army while living to tell the tale and not getting disarmed, etc.as well as garnering increased support and prestige through doing so- while Israel did not (ensuring the security of country's northern borders from Hezbollah).

It's arguable, and it's not over, but that's my take on it.
