CNN sorry for reporter's gaffe
Aug. 30, 2006. 11:53 AM
FRAZIER MOORE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK Kyra Phillips, anchor of CNN's Live From..., unwittingly upstaged President Bush's speech in New Orleans with on-the-air analysis of her husband and the marriage of her brother all live from a CNN ladies room.
Unaware that her wireless microphone was "live" during her break, Phillips could be heard overriding Bush's prepared address Tuesday as he was seen marking the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
The Atlanta-based Phillips, in conversation with an unidentified woman in an echoey room, dismissed most men with a vulgar term, but called herself "very lucky in that regard. My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving you know, no ego you know what I'm saying? Just a really passionate, compassionate, great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there.''
A few moments later, she observed that "brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine. I've got to be protective of him.''
Why? "His wife is just a control freak."
At that point, another voice cut in: "Kyra."
"Yeah, baby?" replied Phillips on hearing her name.
"Your mike is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air."
CNN anchor Daryn Kagan, looking flustered, then broke into the telecast with a recap of what Bush had been saying.
Phillips later apologized to viewers "for an issue we had with our mikes" and "for a little bit of an interruption there during the president."
CNN issued its own official statement, explaining the network had "experienced audio difficulties during the president's speech today in New Orleans. We apologize to our viewers and the president for the disruption."
The network also apologized to the White House. |

Wel, at least she didn't say anything bad about her husband. Or her boss. Or B*sh. |

I remember once my friend was being interviewed by the CBC about the new Loonie coins. The reporter was asking him (a coffee server at a Second Cup and clearly not a metallurgist) if there was real gold in the new dollar coins.
He kind of looked at her like she was an idiot.
"No. Gold is a rare and valuable metal. It's likely this coin is just plated with some kind of bronze alloy."
She looked at him like he was a genius.
I worked at that same Second Cup and the editor of the lifestyles page would come in for coffee. I used the word Quisling with her and she had no clue what the word meant.
I took journalism for a year in university and switched my major. The biggest bunch of morons on the planet are in j-school. For people training to report on the world, it was disturbing how little they knew about the world and how little curiosity they actually had for finding out. Even when I was arts editor for my U paper, I was always blown away a) how few j-school majors actually volunteered to write for the paper (you know get some experience) b) how badly they wrote. The best writers were math majors, history majors, geography majors... the j-school and English majors were just flakes.
There's a whole school of thought in the newspaper world that, given a choice between a j-school grad and someone with a degree in anything else and practical experience, most editors will pass on the j-school grad.
One of the most embarrassing things I ever witnessed was a "meet the working media" thingy at the local press club. This was Windsor, Ontario. Population 200,000 and dropping. We had not yet lost our CBC station. The press club invited students from both the local college j-school program and the university's j-school program. There would be free beer. The turn out from the college was close to all of 'em. The only people to turn out from the university were me and my friend Steve. Neither of us were technically enrolled in the program at that point but since we were both involved in media (campus radio/cable tv news), we saw the event's flyers.
The local media celebs all gave little talks on how they got their starts. Really, though Windsor is in many ways the a-hole of Ontario, if you're making a good wage and you're not working in a factory, you're a big fish in Windsor. And you can see major concerts in Detroit. It's not such a bad place do work in media. Every media person had basically the same story: I worked half my career in Northern Ontario/the NWT for small radio stations/newspapers, and I worked my way up the food chain and here I am. I'm very lucky but don't think you can graduate and just jump into Toronto media. You have to move and move to small cold, windswept communities up north and learn your craft.
The message was not lost on me. So during the Q/A portion, this more than drunk college j-school student got up to ask a question... but one of those questions where you're just trying to make a little speech. He biatched about how Windsor provided so little job opportunities for j-school grads. A senior CBC reporter got up to the mike to take the "question". He just tore the guy a new one "Weren't you listening to anything we said? No one here got a job in Windsor right out of school. We had to take small jobs and work our way up."
The odds anyone in Windsor media would be keen to higher a St. Clair college grad for a media job were not high that night and for a goodly amount of time following.
So yeah, odds are the guy driving the mobile studio is more intelligent and has a better grasp of what's going on in the world than anyone involved in ENG. |

| The funniest thing about the mishap is not that she went to pee with the mic on, but that she calls her sister-in-law a control freak. |

I guess depending on your gender, her rant was more thought provoking than something Bush could ever come up with. Besides, the majority of his speeches are written for him and the only time his own words come out are when he **** up.
That retard should be upstaged more often, as it would definetely make the world a better place.... |

What's that all about? I watched the video and read the comments, but I still don't get it.

That wasn't their fault. They had just finished the broadcast and the commercial went up when it suddenly went back to them when they were joking around ("Damn that's cold! .....so cold...." uh oh) whereupon they realized the camera was back on them and suddenly they were composed again. The funny thing was they had just announced the death sentence (I think) of that cult leader. |

Any idea why they were remarking "that's cold"? Was it in reference to the Aum guy, or an unknown inside joke?

I'm not really sure. It could have been anything because all that was caught were those words.
