General Motors drops 'Survivor'
The automaker says it is pulling its advertising from the program for the upcoming season but not because of recent controversy.
August 30 2006: 3:33 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors is pulling its advertising from CBS's reality hit "Survivor," according to a news report Wednesday.

A GM spokesperson said the decision was made about three months ago and is not related to the controversy surrounding next season's competition, which will pit tribes of different ethnicities against one another, TV Week said.

The new season of "Survivor," which debuts September 14, will be a race among races.

Last week, CBS (Charts) announced that, for the reality show's 13th edition, "Survivor: Cook Islands," 20 contestants will be organized into four tribes divided along ethnic lines - black, white, Hispanic and Asian.

GM (Charts) decided to pull its advertising from "Survivor" because sponsoring the show no longer fit the company's business objectives, TV Week said, citing a GM spokesperson.

"It's been a great relationship with the show," but it was difficult to integrate a car into a program that's set on an island, the spokesperson said, according to the report.

"GM has been a great partner on the show for 12 editions," a CBS spokesman remarked. "They informed us of this decision several months ago, and at that time they had no knowledge of the format."

The CBS spokesman declined to disclose which companies would sponsor the show this season.

Not so much about the article, but what I thought of when reading it.

What do you think of the "ethnic divide"? I do think they forgot

I know he is British (Indian) and not Muslim

Stupidest idea in a long time.

Dividing into groups based on nationality or region would be alright.

But based on the colour of their skin and facial features?

Dumb.

Even regressive.

Agree with Mr. Islander.

Also, the person in that picture is from the show Lost. Is he also going to be on Survivor? What a strange career.

Qinella, are you still asleep? Wink That was a joke. They forgot about Muslims (or ignored them in their race discussions, and yes, I know it's a religion). So I chose a Muslim (who happens to live on an island) to portray my opinion.

There's 20 total people, and 13 are from California.

BTW, I stopped watching these after the second one, but this one caught my eye.

Reality shows are getting old. Leave it to American TV to keep churning out stupid shows. It's best to have a life away from the idiot box.

I have never once sat through a full episode of Survivor.

I would take (and have taken!) 10 hours on Dave's reading messages, picking my nose, scratching my butt, and writing inane posts over 10 minutes of watching any reality show.

Same same. You me same page. Spot on. Word. Absolutely.

But then again, "ETHNIC Survivor"?? ... That sounds so horrible that it could actually be worth watching.

The have to do something to drum up ratings ... Survivor is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

No, the first one was new and interesting, and it's hard to argue against that. The second one I watched because my entire residence got drunk and watched it down in the lounge Smile

I agree for most shows. I make an exception for The Amazing Race, though. That's a cool show.

I thought you meant as a middle easterner, because only black, white, Hispanic and Asian were mentioned in the article.

Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that I've seen some episodes of Lost finally, so I want to be in the club.

actually I would rather watch paint dry than watch survivor - I watched a couple of episodes of the first series and 1 of the second and then wrote it off as a waste of time.
