The Doors. Meh. I can't stay drunk long enough to like them. Jim's dead. There ya go.
Radiohead...not my cup of tea musically, but I respect them. They never once pandered to their fans in such a way that they produced never ending strings of Ok Computer-wannabe CDs. Every CD went in new directions and there aren't many bands who are willing to be so experimental. In that way, I think Radiohead are really artists. |

As did we all.
Most of us moved on when we realized how overhyped the Doors were..
except for the musically-stunted.
Jinju, eren't you one of the cranky geezers in that thread whining about how there's no good music today? |
Rock died in the 70s. There is no good music today, with rare rare exceptions. Overall today's music is fit for the trash. |

Les Claypool is a good bass player....but Primus loses their novelty pretty quickly for me...

Totally, if you knew anything about making music you would respect the musicianship and the studio and production work they are capable of. They've achieved enormous success without ever "selling out"...they actually didn't think Ok Computer was going to be well received at all...and if it hadn't have been they wouldn't have cared... |

There's good music out there - you just haven't heard it yet. |

Exactly.
They're on the VanIslander program*: wait ten years, if it ages well, then they'll grudgingly add it to their collection.
Meanwhile, they can continue to proclaim "There's no good music being made any more!!!"
It's the mentality of an old fart, regardless of actual age.
*apologies to Vanislander, that's probably not a fair assessment of his musical style but I can't help but remembering his comments on U2...

"novelty"? Perhaps you could elaborate?
I tend to dissect bands. Tim Alexander is enough alone for me to dig on Primus. A great drummer with a very unique style. |

I listen to plenty of great music. My point is that it isn't widespread. Everything on the radio or MTV is garbage...

I get bored with it. The overall sound, the quirkiness...doesn't mean I don't respect them as musicians (but I HATE his voice)...Just like I love funk, but I can easily get bored by it after a short time... |

Whoa...I think you be a bit out of touch with what's being made.
I agree that if you take a passive approach to your music then you will hear a lot of naff songs but if you take an active role there are plenty of gems out there.
The hay stack is big these days but there are a lot of sharp needles to be found.
And yeah with the MTV thing...I don't particularly like it (mainly because of their editing style) but on occasion I have seen some cool stuff on there. I happen to know that there are a lot of talented musicians and visual peeps working for MTV that do very good stuff on the side (MTV is their day job). They do have some influences in the programming and aesthetic of MTV which is a good thing. All that said..I very rarely watch it. You've got to give props to the people behind the business model of MTV though...a work of genius. |

The Penetrators.
Oh, wait a minute, you said ...

Sorry, my mistake. I withdraw my nomination. The Penetrators simply suck. Period. |

There is more access to more music now than there has ever been before to paint it all with a ridiculous statement like that. Perhaps you mean the AM radio stuff, then I can agree. But then, when hasn't that been the worst of music? |

Here are the winners from last night's MTV VMAs:
Panic! At the Disco
James Blunt
Kelly Clarkson
The All American Rejects
A.F.I.
Beyonce featuring Slim Thug and Bun B
Pussycat Dolls featuring Snoop Dog
Chamillionaire featuring Krayzie Bone
The Black Eyed Peas
Pink
Avenged Sevenfold
Fallout Boy
So you must admire some of these "musicians" then? I'm curious to know which ones?
Point: mainstream music is complete shite...and in my opinion it has been for the last 10 years... |

Obviously thats a generalization. If you consider the thousands of radio stations out there, of course there is going to be some good music (college radio and jazz stations in particular). Even MTV is bound to play some really cool videos now and then...its just not common. |
