What's the deal with passport stamping?

When I went to Germany they did not stamp my passport. Is this because I don't need a visa?

Some posts talk about banks stamping the passport. How big are these stamps? I the issue that we have to get a new passport if it fills up?

A lot of places don't stamp passports anymore, especially if they are relatively porous and busy border crossings. If you're concerned about it (or if you want the stamp as a souvenir), just ask when you're at the immigration counter, and they'll usually do it for you. They may laugh at you, but they'll usually do it.

For most of the EU, you will only get a stamp (if you are NOT from an EU country) on your initial entry into the EU. If you are from the UK you will NOT get a stamp unless you ask for it.

When you enter most other countries you will get a stamp on arrival and a stamp on departure. These are about 2cm x 2cm stamps.

The stamps that the banks here tend to place in your passport are ONLY on the last page and are usually about a 1/2 cm in diameter. It would take a few years of stamps to even come close to filling the page.

The big use of pages in your passport will be the full-page stick-in, sticky visas that most countries are starting to use now instead of visa stamps.

I found a link on state.gov that says you can have pages added to your passport. The application form says if you are overseas you cannot use that form and instead you should contact the nearest US embassy or consulate.

It also says you can request a larger passport when you renew.
