I heard the Ultimate costed anywhere from $399 to $450 for a standalone copy. |

Yeah...if you install Vista after a format, you will need a different incarnation of Windows to use the 'upgrade' edition. As with the upgrade version of XP, I had to insert an old 98SE CD to get it to install. No biggie... |

if I am using a pirated copy of XP, will a upgrade VISTA still work?
I want to go legit, but a stand-alone VISTA is a little steep. |

That's the thing. A lot of people want to go legit, but the price is just too high for that. I don't know how much it cost to develop, so I won't make judgements, but if the price was lower, they would have a lot on non-legit go legit. |

A good tip...always pay for your OS. It's the heart of a stable system and trying to find workarounds for Vista will be a royal pain. Do-able, but why bother? Vista will be with us for a while, so the spread out cost is tiny.
Superhero...I think your pirate copy of XP will work with the upgrade edition. Unless of course, it requires you to validate your copy of XP online prior to an install of Vista. That would be a kicker, eh? Try a workaround at the COM level...tricky. It wouldn't surprise me if, failing to have connectivity at the time of installation, one will have to phone MS, tell them your serial number and they will issue an install code to go with your purchased serial number.
If so, within the first couple of weeks of Vistas' debut, you will see a flood of these codes on the net. Then, the first move by MS would be a Valve/Steam-ish mass banning of numbers for future installs.
I dunno...I think MS will be fairly serious about anti-piracy measures with Vista. Of course it will be broken, but as it stands, getting around the current XP "Windows Genuine Advantage" is already too goofy for me. There is a level that I will go to to use software, but with MS and their products full of holes that need almost weekly patching, it is just too much. Go legit on the OS and save your energy for third-party software that isn't the target of every hacker on earth. |

In the end I'll probably bite the bullet and by a stand-alone edition since I don't want to run into problems upgrading from a pirated XP. Additionally I like to reinstall every 6 months and that would then involve installing xp and then vista - not fun. |

The upgrade version doesn't require one to install the other version first, just insert the old version into the CD-ROM tray for a minute while it checks the contents to make sure it's a Windows version. The 'check' takes only a minute, then it asks for the new CD again to continue with the install. |

Actually you don't have to buy a standalone copy.
Just get an OEM. No one is going to tell that you installed it yourself. |

Fooling XP and Microsoft into thinking you have a legitimate and activated copy of the software is ridiculously easy... you just go about using Windowsupdate as if were ethical enough to pay for a copy |
