Photo Contest 2006
Hello!

**EDIT: Site's up!! http://koreanphotos.net ** Send a PM to this photocontest account to participate! **

About this "photocontest" account
This is Lemon typing. There are a few helpers behind the scenes this time - non contributors, including Superfly - who are going to help me process account registration as well as approve photos and make sure goatsex doesn't get uploaded.

Last time I did this all myself, and as I'm headed into holidays this week back in Korea I really don't want to be spending time in PC bangs checking for new registrations and new photos. It's nice to have help. That's why it would have been useless for me to use my Lemon account to receive "register me" PMs - I don't plan to be around here much over my one-week holiday.

We aim to have it so your photos appear within hours of their uploading. Having several people on the backend helps make that happen.

What happens next:
1. Please send a PM to THIS ACCOUNT asking for an account to be set up for you on the photo album software, and the password you'd like for it (you can change your own password once you get in). Your username will be cut-and-pasted from Dave's, with the same spelling.

2. You'll get a PM back with login details as I process them, likely tonight (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday). And then you'll be good to go.

SO DO THIS NOW!!! Hit that PM button at the bottom of this post, and ask to be registered. Please provide:

1. the password you want
and 2. a functioning e-mail address

The Contest
Far too much has been written about rules. I'd like to keep them to a minimum. The major change from last time is that we'll have outside-Korea photos too. I haven't totally worked out in my brain how this will be handled in the software, but I'll cross that bridge over the next day.

1. And because of this change, we'll do a change in the total number of submissions per person, too, to a total of 16 images, divided as you wish between the two categories.

2. UPDATED Each account will be allocated 6000kb. This means you won't be able to upload a whole bunch of straight-from-the-camera images, but will need to shrink them somewhat down to 300k or so each. We did 2000k/person/12 images last time and that was plenty, so 6000k/person/16 images this time shouldn't be a major restriction.

So, choose your 16 best. If you've maxed out your 16, delete one before uploading another. If you don't delete one of your old photos to allow #17, we'll do it for you.

3. No photos of friends, family, your students or your pets.

4. Blatant trickery through post-processing (film OR digital) might get ruled out of bounds, but subtle gentle touch-ups (film OR digital) are perfectly fine.

5. Anyone can view the photo gallery, but to "comment" or "rate" in the photo album software, you must also be a contributor.

6. Judging: The most-viewed one or two images from the In Korea and Out of Korea categories of each contributor will be submitted to the judges when we get to the judging stage. I think a logical time for that will be the end of the year, around Christmas. That gives people the next 3-4 months to build up decent portfolios.

7. Prizes:
a. we'll gratefully accept any donations for prizes
b. you get a pat on the head for a job well done
c. you get a sticky posted on the board for a month with your winning photo
d. bragging rights
e. If you win you get to run this thing next year. If you don't win you get to run it for the next two years.

The contest/prize aspect of this is not important really, by design as well as by necessity. The purpose of the "contest" is for those of us who take pictures to have a place to show them off to our peers. And it's in that spirit that hopefully everyone will proceed - the last time out everyone was supportive and constructive of the efforts of others.

I'm sure it will be the same this time.

So register!! Hit the PM button and ask for an account now!

**edit - Closing Date: December 17th 2006**

What if we only have Korean images? Does that mean we are handicapped to 10 images while others get 20? I say make it 20 max and who cares where they are from.

**edit - see updated rules - 16 photos, not 10, divided up as you wish between the two categories**

Some will struggle to reach 10, while other more prolific photographers (like you) will struggle to keep it down to 10. There are software as well as practical reasons to have such a small limit - the front of the page will show random photos, and if you flood it with 20 while someone else has 4, your pictures will get much much higher visibility. I don't want the smaller fries to get buried under the massive portfolios of the board's superstars.

That 10 limit also forces people to make hard decisions about their very best photos - give us the best of the best. Also, there's nothing stopping you from putting a link in the software to your flikr page ("for more from me, click here...").

Anyway, you might agree or disagree with my logic, but it's based on the experience of 2004.

Then make it a 10 poto limit across the board. I have only Korea images. That mans I upload 10. Ok, fine but Joe Schmoe gets to upload 20 because he has Pakistani, Indian and American photos on top of his Korean shots? So that also stomps on the the little guy with 4 images, doesnt it, as well as me?

10 is good if its for everybody. 20 for everybody is beter as you have the space.

Also,

im fricken sick of the bickering in the last thread. Im burrying the hatchet. So shevek, I insulted you, I take it back. I was initially happy about the contest then the bickering almost turned me off to the idea of even participating. But thats stupid, I want to participate, but it should be fun. So there shouldnt be any animosity. shevek, your shots are interesting and good, I was pissed off at your insinuations about cheating so I insulted your shots. I take it back. Hell, I dont even care if you do the same, I just want to stop bickering and have fun.

This goes to a couple of others who got in the hated exchange. I dont remembr the names as the posts have been erased. But you know who you are.

I take pictures of animals a lot. It won't be good form for me to post pictures of my cats, but what about other people's pets in outdoor settings?

Also, I don't see the need to have photos outside of Korea. Then it becomes a contest to see who's been to the coolest places. I'll be happy so long as they aren't in competition with Korea photos.

Do the pictures have to have been taken after the contest officially began? Um.. has it officially begun?

You're not the only one.

This time, the rules are what they are. Here's the program we're offering, and all are welcome to join. That last thread stands as a testament that making-rules by committee and negotiation simply won't work in this environment.

I appreciate Jinju's argument that Photographer Y who has In and Out of Korea photos - 20 of them - has more entries or chances to win than the one who has just the 10 from inside Korea. It's a valid point. With an easy solution: an "outside Korea photos" winner, and a "Korean photos" winner. Treat them distinctly. If you're not entering the "other half", ignore it if you wish.

At this point, these are really teeny tiny details. Go take some pictures. Judging will happen in December. In fact, don't even think about the judging. Just take some good pictures and display them. And give constructive opinions to others. Focusing on the contest aspect misses the point of all of this.

No - older photos are fine. Yes, it has begun.

We'd have loved to have used it, and it would have saved us $18 US. but you've been hard to get a hold of in the last week and a half... I'm hoping you're still willing to contribute!

I disgree. I've seen some pretty crap photos from some really stunning places. A decent photographer could make Shindorim Station look cool. It all depends.

Either way, photos from in or out of Korea, I don't care. Let's just get the thing started. PM sent.

Sounds fun. Let's keep it light. No one's paying us to do this.

The rules don't care whose pets they are. No pets. Wild birdies? Super. Worms? Great. There's no problem with animals, in general. I readily admit I'm displaying a bias, and I'll accept all charges that I'm being elitist. But pet photos are right around the level of baby photos, and just one step up from blog entries about your lunch. Precious to you, possibly interesting to others, but not quite photo contest-worthy. I have 100 million Myspace accounts to show you to support my view of this. Let's aim for something beyond your personal snapshot collection.

Otherwise, I can - and will - flood this thing with 4000 photos (yes, I have them) of my 2 year old daughter. Welcome to the apocalpyse.

** edit ** small amendment -- animals that might be someone else's pet are fine, but it shouldn't just be "here's a cat on a chair" - if they're animal photos that tell a story about a location (and not just a chair), then sure. And it's not *your* pet ("look at my doggie!!").

**edit again** another adjustment: What I had in mind regarding categories is complicated software-wise, and jinju's suggestion saves me a lot of work. So - a variation on his suggestion - 16 photos per user, divided up AS YOU PLEASE between the In-Korea and Outside Korea categories.

When you upload a photo, it will then ask you which of the two albums does it go into. Choose one.

Hi - site's now up and running at :

http://koreanphotos.net

Some of the colors in the interface aren't what I'd like (dark writing on a dark background and other such issues), but I'll deal with that in the morning after a sleep.

All account requests so far received have been processed: start uploading!! PM me with any trouble reports.

Also send PMs to participate! Don't forget to send along a requested password.
