What are the gyms like in general and how much do they charge (round about figure will do)?

Also do the large majority have a squat rack and olympic bar or are they mainly filled with fixed weights and appliances?

Thanks

A decent health club by city hall here. Daily workout cots 2,500, or 45,000 for the month. Typica machine weights targeting uppr and lower body muscles, free weight squat rack and a couple bench presses. Stretching mats, dumbells and a stam room in the changing room.

They run the gamut from crappy little places that have less weights than I had in my basement back home, to fantastic. Some old, small gyms won't even let foreigners sign up.

They charge anywhere from $30 a month in rural areas to $100+ a month for the trendier, larger, well-equiped gyms in Seoul. Most will have squat racks, and Oly bars.

You also get free entertainment. You get to watch people trying to work out with their cellphone clasped in their hand at all times, people on jiggle machines, and this new machine that has two foot pads that jiggle your legs--but which people get down on all fours and mostly use to jiggle their arms.

^ Nice post. Laughing

And dont forget to get to see people walking BACKWARDS on treadmills.

Watch adults do "hula-hoop" thinking they are taking off fat. Bench presses that have a range of a few inches. People wearing baseball caps while they are "working out."

Anymore?

watch girls work out in high heels and sunglasses because they live in apkujeong, are mega-famous and don't want to get recognized.

watch dudes not get out of your way because they're gazing at themselves in the mirror.

watch dudes who can't lift what you lift talk shit to their friend about you about the way the foreigner is lifting weights.

buy an mp3 player and learn to ignore everyone...

The gym I go to is owned and operated by a couple of very nice guys, one of which is a Korean American. The greatest part is that the ajummas are walking on the treadmills in another room, so it tends to be pretty quiet where the weights are. The very few guys (generally, mid to late 20's guys who probably have been lifting for less than a year) who have given me some nasty looks quickly change their attitude once I'm 5 minutes into my workout, warmed up, and doing reps with 4 to 5 times the weight they lift. They must change their workout schedule after that because I never see them again.

I wear a baseball cap when I'm working out. I have long, curly hair and it keeps the wispies out of my eyes. When I taught aerobics, I wore a baseball cap because it kept the mic from slipping around on my head. Is there some stigma attached to wearing a baseball cap while exercising?

Don't forget the threads about gyms that have never been without a foreigner who couldn't bench-press at least three times whatever the local Korean guys were bench-pressing.

My favorite part is the changing room where you will see grown men blow dry their pubic hair and the fluff it up into a little sac afro! I love the gym here!

I like to workout with intensity. Doing sprint/jump rope in intervals. I think wearing a baseball cap while doing these would be impossible. I associate wearng baseball caps in the gym with Korean guys who look at themselves in the mirror for 5 minutes before they start working out. Also, I sweat like a beast. A baseball cap would just get wet.

I don't wear one because it would make me feel way to hot. 80% of your body heat is lost by your head, they say.

Naw, man. I just lift a lot more than the insecure weiners who give me some attitude. Them being Korean has nothing to do with it (the owner of my gym is well over 250 pounds of lean muscle. He could probably crush me like a bug with his thumb). I've simply been lifting for 15 years, and they haven't.
