When you have any political leader in Utah leading thousands of anti-Bush protesters through the streets of Salt Lake City and calling Bush a "dishonest, warmongering, human-rights-violating president," that's astounding news. (Especially if you are aware of Utah's history as a pro-war place.)

[A good news note for the pro-war side of this board: I've been instructed by a mod not to put up entire articles anymore. ]
Demonstrators and counter-demonstrators
Even in Utah -- which gave Bush a wider margin of victory than any other state in the 2004 election -- the president's appearance was a source of dispute. Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, a Democrat, led thousands of anti-Bush demonstrators on a march through the city Wednesday. He called Bush a "dishonest, warmongering, human-rights-violating president."

There's a great doco called, This Divided State.
It's all about the turmoil created when some students invite Michael Moore to speak at a Utah University.
Proof positive of the saying,
"Polarization is addictive. It is the crack of politics -- a short, intense rush that the system craves again and again, until it begins to collapse."

I read that Rocky Anderson is actually quite liberal. It also seems to me that Salt Lake City's reputation as a bastion of conservativism might be somewhat overstated. If I'm not mistaken, it's actually the least Mormon part of Utah, though of course everyone outside of Utah associates the city with Mormonism.
Someone actually from Utah can correct me if I'm wrong about any of this. |

No, you're right. While the entire city is steeped in LDS history and the most famous temple & Church Headquarters are located there, percentage-wise, SLC has the smallest LDS population of any city in the state (with the possible exception of Park City). Last I heard, it was around 50%, compared to about 70% state-wide & 90% just 45 minutes south in Utah valley.
Rocky Anderson is known to be a bit on the liberal side... although a liberal in Utah is a moderate anywhere else. He's not even LDS. I think the previous mayor was also not LDS. |
