My mum sent me some trashy girly magazines as part of my care package (thanks mom) and thumbing through the pages I was so startled at how thin everyone has got. Posh Spice looks like she hasn't eaten since she left the Spice Girls, Lindsay Lohan got a surgeon to age her 20 years, Nicole Richie... should be given liquid chocolate by IV and even Keira Knightley who was already tiny to start with looks down right scarcy these days.
Does anyone outside gay fashion designers actually find that look appealing? |

I don't find it attractive. My best friend back home does, though. He only dates girl who are super thin. Of course, he's a waif as well. |

I like this - a great word for someone who has diet-pilled themselves so thin you're frightened they might disappear. |

One thing I am sick of is the skinny-bashing that society seems to have turned towards as a result of the most recent celebs that you mentioned being in the papers for being so thin.
I don't want to complain about my weight, and come across in the wrong way - but the reality is I am a natually skinny woman. Naturally, meaning non-anorexic, without dieting, and without doing much exercise. I do find that is hard for some women to accept, unfortunately.
It doesn't make me beautiful.....but it also doesn't make me ill, or morally or socially in-the-wrong. The thought that just because I am skinny makes me automatically unattractive is also disturbing. I do get sick of other people's apparent concern over anorexia providing an excuse for bashing other thin women. The number of times I have had other women, mostly people I hardly know, say to me "You're too thin! I really think you should eat more!" Family and friends who know me would never dream of saying something as rude as that. I mean, how often do you say to someone "You're so fat! You need to diet!" The opposite is no less rude.
Last week I had to endure sitting in the ladies' toilets at a friend's wedding to hear other women, who I had just met, gossiping about me at the sinks outside where I was unknowingly peeing ... about how they felt sorry for my fiance because he was dating someone who must "obviously be anorexic" and trying to determine who had sat with me at the meal so they could find out if, and what, I had eaten. At that time I felt like popping the door open and explaining that not only had I cleaned my own plate, but I had also nicked my fiance's bread roll and eaten all 4 of the chocolate covered profiteroles that had been dessert, and continue to express my concern that had they done the same thing, they should save the 50 pound they were about to spend on drinks for a fitness club membership. Would I ever DREAM of such a thing? No. But nor would I find it acceptable to gossip about the weight (over or under) of a woman I had only been introduced to, in a public place.
Personally, I do think that a woman's body type and weight should be of no concern to anyone else. Yes, women who are perceived as role models and are in the papers and magazines all the time DO end up having an affect on young girls who view them constantly, but I think that it is through education of healthy eating, positive body imagine, and a good lifestyly that this can be combatted - not through skinny bashing. It is a shame that some women are involved in an industry where they perceive pressure on their weight and size, however I do wonder how much of that is in fact pressure from themselves. And, as a secondary note, I do have to wonder what role PhotoShop plays in the tabloid industry.
For some reason, just as many people believe that fat-jokes are still acceptable in a P-C world, skinny-bashing is also an acceptable thing. Quite frankly, I think it's none of anyone else's GD business. |

THe problem with society nowadays is people don't tell people they are too thin or fat enough! You are definitely right about the double standard between fat and thin, I can't argue that. But if more people would stop believing being fat is acceptable, it's wouldn't be such an endemic (sp?). Anyways, same goes for thin. There are some fat people who are that way due to medicine or hormones. They don't count. Same goes for skinny people who can't do a thing about it. BUT, that only takes out a small percentage. Most of them can do something about it. It is not acceptable and should not be ignored. There is a difference between insulting and telling people a fact though, insulting not being very helpful. |

i've always noticed the same.
people are usually attracted to someone of a similar nature to themselves.
unless of course its the waifish latina woman who want the big round latino guys.. or the skinny black guys wanting the big black girl (or white girl) with a big butt.
skinny white guys and skinny asian girls seem to go hand-in-hand however.

Hamuhamu made some excellent points in her post, I might add. |

Well the only reason you'd go out with a skeleton chic is because they don't have the strenght to say no |

I like the skinny look for myself, but I don't want a waifish guy. I like a guy to be small and short with a little muscle in the arms. I wear size 0/1, but I don't look deathly, since I have some muscle. |
