By September 2008, all elementary and middle schools in Seoul will have an assistant teacher who is a native English language speaker on staff, a total of about 920 altogether, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said yesterday |

The newly hired teachers are mostly in their 20s and 30s and are citizens from English-speaking countries, including the United States, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Including but not limited to...
Koreans do tend to sort "Canadians" under "Americans"... I guess in the same way lots of Canadians and Americans sort Koreans under "chinamen". |

English teachers in demand
Quote: |
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced yesterday it will assign native English-speaking teachers to all elementary and junior high schools in the city by 2008.... The foreign staff will be required to work as a team with the Korean English teachers. The native speakers will also take part in extra-curricular activity programs, English summer camps, and workshops for English teachers.
The first group of English teachers went through an eight-day orientation, which was organized by the Seoul Office of Education. Most of the 200 teachers are from Canada, Britain, New Zealand, and Australia with most of them in their mid-20s.

What have the Canadians done lately that has upset the Koreans
I remember a few years back when NZ had a bad rep. in Korea. I was looking for work at the time and all the job ads seemed to miss out NZ.
I even got a couple of emails from recruiters saying that schools specifically weren't looking for NZers.
The incident was a murder in NZ by a chinese student against another chinese student coupled with the kidnapping. NZ had a bad rep in the news here for a couple of months.
It blows over and if you will take a hagwon job due to either personality or timing. I feel it might be easier to get work in hagwons regardless of what they say in the advert as most people seem to aim at public schools at the moment. |

Canada is not the only native speaking country left off that list and it does say including those countries, not specifically limited to them, you're been a little paranoid |

Well, I guess they know like the rest of us that Canadians dominate the English teaching field here, so didn't even need mentioning. |

Poor Canada....feeling left out?.......there, there.
It's the Joonang Daily for gods sake! English version! And they used the word including!!
Can you see the Australians, Irish or South Africans complaining?
I nominate this as most whiney post of the month.
For our sakes, try to learn what is relevant. |
