May I suggest that the poll asks people if they are ACTUALLY leaving the country instead. It's not really news.

you haven't spent much time in the states......

home village???

nice.

I suppose the 150,000,000 plus Americans who live in metros of over 1,000,000 people are also equally nazel-gazing.

Anti-Americanism is always interesting, even in its most harmless forms (as here)- for it reflects many times more the mind of the speaker/poster than it does the reality of America.

If you seriously believe that my mildly joshing the inuslarism of many Americans is anti-American your skin must be as thick as a fag paper. Laughing

Wangja, since I'm fairly sure your interlocutor isn't a Brit, you might want to explain to him that "fag paper" in your post refers to the thin paper of a cigarette and not a newspaper for homosexuals. (Obviously, the naughty language filter isn't British either since it tried to *beep* that word.) Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

hahahaha, yes thanks RSR.

I guessed however that the fellow, although not a Brit, is probably teching English and thus might a few synonyms for fag and not the G.A.Y. fag.

Anyway: in the einterests of expanding his international knowledge I could indeed explain that a fag paper is a cigarette paper. Very very thin.

The OP is quite correct.

141,000 Brits leave the country per year, compared with 20,000 in 1994. Meanwhile, a significantly higher number of immigrants enter the country, prepared to work for the minimum wage or less, since the UK minimum wage is a fortune compared to conditions in (mainly) Eastern European countries.

The reason, however, is not taxes. Britain has always been a high-tax state, because of the public services supposedly it offers. The reason is the ludicrously-inflated property prices in GB, meaning punters can get a very good deal on foreign homes and still have money to burn. Finding a UK property for less tthan 250,000 POUNDS is a tall order. Foreign property is a full-blown industry.

Junior - it's a common misconception that British weather is crap. Granted, in most regions, it is. But south-east England (which includes Greater London) is one of the driest, sunniest areas in Europe, with tremendous water shortages. Essex and Kent are as dry as southern Spain.

amazing how much we hear about this evil anti-americanism.

you never hear anti-british or anti-australian or anti-russian or anti-chinese or anti-canada ... you never hear anti-anything.

mayhaps certain people are uncomfortable with criticism ... whilst being good at dishing out their views of other countries, they are rather unreceptive to views about their own nation.

i hate george bush! does that make me anti-american? not at all. he's only one man. and by saying i'm anti-american would make you far more racists than i could ever be!

We hear about anti-Americanism because it is the ideology of quite a few people on this planet.

Post modernity never happened. Anti-Americanism did. The vast majority of people are not incredulous towards big stories. They have their big story.

I'm in grad school now, studying econ etc. Also, I'm not at a yank uni.

Every time the prof, any of my profs, comment on the USA it must be done with some glib and dumb-arse comment about how 'stupid' or 'insular' Americans are. These fcukups are unable to understand that the USA is 300 MILLION people and the most diverse nation in the world. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that Bush is dumb, and thus all Americans (or only those who are white, cause of course they don't mean Arab-yanks or Indian-yanks, as that would be racist) are dumb.

In the mind of much of the world anti-Americanism has replaced logic, reason and thought. If it rains too much or too little in one area one year, this MUST be the result of "global warming" which is caused by "American-style" capitalism and that DUMB Bush and his refusal to sign the mother of all platitudes -- Kyoto. Anything and everything that happens is blamed on the USA.

All over the world gays are killed. Woman are treated worse than Americans treat house pets. Africa has several wars simmering and a full genocide raging. China kills Fauln Gaugn (sp) and harvests their organs for sale. There are some really messed up and evil people on this planet but all I hear about day to day in grad school is the Vietnam war and how dumb Bush is.

It is a psychosis.

Oh of course Anti Americanism exists and is a big problem, where people differ is how to define it.

I'd define it as people trying to blow up planes flying across the alantic whilst some on here would define it as a harmless joke on an internet forum which I think is a bit silly.

Anyway, the ones on here who howl about anti americanism the most are often those who write post after post slagging off muslims, canadians, koreans, europeans ect....so that erodes my sympathy a little, while I agree insulting a whole country is gay I do think if you can't take it back don't dish it out.

On topic Spinoza is 100% correct with his assessment. Property prices are too high for first time buyers, when I'm done with Asia I'll probably settle in Spain. Britions are lucky in the sense that we can work anywhere in the EU without visas as well.
