I just read a days old article in the online Joongang Ilbo. According to it, a bill on animal protection has been passed. I read it with great happiness as this is something that should have been done a long time ago. I made a mental note that I'd have to ask the vet where I needed to go to register my dogs and buy the ID tags. Then I read the second to last sentence:
Quote:
The revision would also require that pet owners muzzle their animals and keep them on leashes so as not to threaten passersby, and that they be responsible for picking up their pets' excrement when taking them to public places. Any pet owners that fail to comply with those regulations could be fined up to 500,000 won under the revised law.

Leashes, no problem. Fantastic in fact. Picking up poo, no problem. Also fantastic. But, MUZZLING them? Aggressive dogs, that I can understand. But to have to muzzle EVERY dog is simply insane!!!!! Surely this is not real?

Thanks for posting this article. It will be interesting to see what the animal protection groups think.

If someone, anyone, attempts to force me to muzzle my dog I will shove my foot so far up their ass they will be dining on their own excrement for years.

People who have their dogs on leashes should not have to muzzle their dogs unless the dogs are ultra-aggressive and/or the owner can't control them.

It's positively laughable to think that the government wants me to muzzle my 2 kilo Maltese who wags her entire body at the sight of any human that walks by.

happeningthang, I'd actually be for restraining small children first. Parents don't seem to be able to restrain them from trying to pluck the eyes out of small dogs or pulling their ears or tails off, etc. Although I'm glad that my dogs show admirable restraint, I wouldn't blame them if they DID bite such idiots, be they children or adults. It's sad that even when your dogs are leashed, you can't keep stupid people off of them.

Do they make muzzles in little-lap-dog size??

I wouldn't worry - I've never seen anyone using muzzles on their dogs as yet, and I'm sure little fluff dogs are going to be excluded from this. It'll be yet another law that's widely disregarded, but is there for prosecution when someone's dog goes postal.

PS

By the way, I love dogs and have had a dog as a pet throughout my life. Still, there are those sensationalised instances of baby maulings by rottweilers, pit bulls and the like... I think that this law is going to be aimed at dogs of this size. I was bitten seriously by a dog as a kid. I was petting the dog at the time. Nothing objectionable there. That dog got a bullet, and I think that's how it should be. Kids first dogs second.

That's what I'm hoping for: that it's a law like "Don't speed." Or, "Don't drive while drunk."

pets should be made illegal. Animals belong in 4 places:

the wild
farms
zoos
on a plate as food

And I know a certain part of your body where I'd like to firmly jam my foot.

muzzling dogs seems a little extreme and silly. i'm sure this'll be one of those 'laws' that is never enforced.
