Just to throw in my two sense. . .My wife and I are divers and we stayed at Tuna Bay and Coco Hut (right next to eachother). We were there for for a week and had a blast. We actually just got back about 4 weeks ago. We went diving with Sea Horse, which was fantastic. Dive the Sugar Wreck site if you go. It was spectacular, we saw giant puffer fish in a huge school that was un-real.

Just off Tuna Bay is a reef that had excellent snorkeling for just relaxing days. We actually walked over to another bay which was just over two hills and had the best snorkel trip ever.(20 min walk from TB) We went all the way to the rocks where the sand ends and got in the water. From there we snorkled over to shark point. It was epic. Along the way we saw huge potato groupers, turtles galore, and several black tip reef sharks, not to mention much more. Sea Horse will let you borrow their gear for free to snorkel with if you are diving with them.

As far as accomodation, we were there in the busy season and had to change rooms and hotels 3 times because we never book ahead. My wife liked Tuna Bay better, but I preferred the atmosphere of Coco Hut. THey are close together and it shouldnt be crowded when you are there so no worries. Stay away from a place called Arwana. There is a leaky pipe in front of the hotel with gross stuff coming out!

Have fun! I wish I were there right now.

I will also be going to Tuna Bay at the end of this month...really looking forward to it. What is the best way to get to Besar? I was thinking of flying from KL or taking the overnight bus...any suggestions?

Wouldn't it be better to fly from KL to Kota Bharu?

Then take the ferry over?

Edit: Check out these flights.

If you like trains and have got the time, there is a train too. It's slower than the bus and slightly more expensive if I remember correctly (RM50 or thereabouts) but perhaps a bit more comfortable.

Be aware that it doesn't actually stop in Kota Baru but slightly outside in a place called Tanah Merah. You'll have to catch a taxi to Kota Baru or you alternatively, you can go straight to the ports (Kuala Besut/Tok Bali)

I hear tell that you can't get malaysian currency outside of Malaysia.

Is the KL airport a decent enough place to exchange, or is there a better place? Is it possible to exchange on the islands?

Re: Exchange at the airport.

I've never changed at KL airport. Airports will usually give you an OK exchange rate.

You can use your credit card on the island (at some places) but will incur a heavy charge. Go for cash,

Nice review! Thanks for that... wish I was there.

I've got to ask because I'm a little dense and you've made me curious, so bear with me - what is it we're to see in the last picture? What's in her hand, tests?

That's what I thought. Though you went for the nice ones.

In a freaky coincidence, we also took tests like those to those islands in 2003, which we had purchased in KL. Much cheaper ones.

Good to see that you got around to the diving Smile and I can see that you did go with Seahorse Divers. Did you get on the course with Brigette?

What did you think of Tuna Bay? Did you check out any of the other beaches?
