I also hate Air Canada. I fly direct from Seoul to Toronto on KAL and never had a problem - polite service and pretty airline attendants lol. Yeah.

I also try to avoid Air Canada at all costs. However, my director just informed me that the cheapest ticket he could get for me from Incheon to Toronto was with them... so in 3 weeks I will be making the dreaded flight.
I assume beer and wine is still free on international AC flights? Does anyone have advice on how to make those 13 hours more bearable?

Sit next to a cute Korean chick? Certainly made my flight from Vancouver to ICN on AC go by quicker.

That was the only time I've flown AC. I didn't find it any worse than American or United.

Oh, boy! Not too late to make a change? I think if I were in your shoes, I would offer to pay the difference to fly with Korean Air or beg him to let you shop around for another airline that's the same price or cheaper.

Xanadu travel in Itaewon told me that NorthWest was cheaper than AC. I know that everybody says they're NorthWorst, but I doubt they're worse than AC. Canadian businesses in general give much worse customer service than American ones. Hats off to you guys down south!

If a change is not possible, the consolation is that you can at least drink Canadian beer on the plane. Sometimes they even have Sleemans. Yes, it's fee on international flights, but don't expect to get so much as a smile on domestic routes.

The one saving grace of AC, over NorthWest, is that at least it is a direct route so the pain is over as quickly as possible. With Northwest, the pain is prolonged with the stop-over and extra flight. It all comes down to, how do you pull your bandaid off?

Luck of the draw right? I'll likely be beside an ajoshi who can lecture me about the kind of people who come to Korea to teach English.

No change possible. Sad
But the mention of Sleeman made my mouth water. Honey Brown or Original Dark, here I come!

True... I leave ICN at 7:30pm and land at Pearson at 7:30pm the same day. Add good beer, subtract customer service = should be a non-issue.

I'm now regretting being so picky about AC. Since I'm now flying Northwest, with an extra stop =/ (incheon-tokyo-detroit-halifax).
Guess I should have just taken what they were offering....who am I to be picky!? I'm not paying for it!!
I'm just kicking myself in the arse now, I could have saved myself about 4 hours with the AC flight.

The one bright spot about all this is that I'm going home!!! 5 weeks and counting!

When I have flown, they've only had Sleeman's Creme Ale - which is the blonde one. Not bad. Very welcome after drinking Cass & Hite for months and months. There is one more good thing with AC. Since you're going quite a distance, you should be sure to collect Aeroplan miles. AC belongs to the Star Aliiance which means you can collect and redeem your miles with a lot of airlines. These two things are about AC's only savings grace.

I've gotten a couple of free tickets this way. It's good. Still, I've gotten so fed up with AC that I would pass up the airmiles just to get an enjoyable flight.

Someone should email this thread's link to AC to let them know what we think of them.

They're not. Polite and pleasant Northwest employees can in fact be found, though certain ground crews (Boston being a major one) have infamous reputations. In my experience, it's rare that a NW person will give you anything like that patented Air Canada snarl. When I've had slipups in itineraries with Northwest, it's always been handled well. They even gave me free trips to Amsterdam and Bangkok after one of their mistakes. I don't dread Northwest flights.

But for my money, the WORST North American airline has to be NW's partner, Continental. I can handle the cranky grandmother flight attendants, but the pinnacle of Continental's charms is the Newark ground crew, which is populated by scary monsters. Their "Customer Service Desk" airside staff is so rude it's comical. If you're in the airport and have time to kill, go ask them for help with something and await the blast of scorn and abuse. But they're also cheap, so I end up flying them, with the lowest of expectations.

Slightly off-topic, for Asian airlines I like Singapore Airlines ok but they're overrated. Malaysian Airlines is also good, but within SE Asia they're overpriced. Thai is decent. Royal Brunei is cheap if you're not flying from Brunei but the service is sub-par. My favourite cheap airline - AIR ASIA. What an awesome airline: flights for $5, friendly flight attendants, new A320s with leather seats...

It's not a good thing when a Southeast Asian budget airline exceeds Air Canada in service and comfort.

I met my first Korean girlfriend on a Korean Air flight from Toronto to Seoul 10 years ago. We dated for 3 months. It was a nice way to get to know the country. Be sure to pray to the seat assignment gods.

I, too, hate Air Canada with a passion. On my flight to Korea, I was lucky enough to have a first class ticket. I still had to wait three hours for a flight attendant to show up so I could get some water. Beeping first class!

This thread should me made into a sticky.

ajgeddes told a similar story as my own. I love Cathay Pacific. My wife & I took them to Melbourn and also to Toronto (both via HK). I think that they're the bomb! The only downside is that I have 29,960 airmiles in the Marco Polo Club. I still need 40 more miles to hit 3 grand and be in the Silver membership. Sucks!
Sad
BTW, Lemon is right, I must try Air Asia one day.

I just (Aug 28/06) flew to Korea from Toronto on United. It was a one way for $830 CAN all incl. I looked at some return flights for about $1100 CAN, but there were some cheaper ones later in Sept. Not sure what the rest of the year's prices are like. Downside - there were two stopovers - one in Chicago and one in Japan, but they were 1.5 and 2 hours long. Basically browse the duty free and check email and your ready to baord again. I booked on a discount internet site and it was a non-changeable/non-refundable ticket. If you don't mind that, you can PM me and I'll try to find the site for you.
