A Korean friend of mine told me last night that one of her friends is friends with a recruiter of English teachers in Seoul. Apparently this guy has been saying that male foreign teachers think that Korean women are "easy" and view them purely as "toys." This was based on the fact that a teacher he recruited broke up with his Korean girlfriend when his contract expired, instead of staying and marying her. Luckily my friend is not so small-minded to actually believe such generalisations, but what a sorry state of affairs when the recruiters have such a bad impression of foreign teachers. I am aware that there are some 'players' over here, but its a pity that we all get tarred with the same brush |

Last time I tried to use a recruiter (Julice ), she went off on me because I was indecisive (which is a standard reaction, but apparently one she can't tolerate ). It was quite clear she had no respect for me (didn't know me from Adam, either). I decided not to use a recruiter after that.
Do English teachers have respect for recruiters? Based on my experience, they are money-hungry dogs who lie to teachers, are dishonest, and then abandon the teacher once they bring them over. The first recruiter I used kept telling me I'd be in Korea within the week, so I quit my job, packed everything up, told my roomate I was moving out, and then he strung me along for another 3 weeks!!! Funny, cuz I thought about taking another job, but I didn't want to screw him over when I already commited myself. I don't think that way anymore. |

Same here guys/girls,
i used to remember to check out my recruiters website and it said in the FAQs: We will stay in contact with all of our teachers once in korea.
- needless to say, when i first arrived and didnt see the teacher who was supposed to pick me up, i tried to call his hand-phone but no answer, had to call his office and a staff person answered.
after that, at least 4 or 5 weeks passed until i got a message from him "wondering how i was doing". |

My first recruiter had a baby talk "conversation" with his wife while I was trying to ask him some questions that were pretty important to me. He was so unprofessional I nearly hung up on him. Who has business conversations with their wife sitting on their knee? |

My first recruiter strung me along for well over a month. They found a job for me at first, and I signed the contract and, in my ignorance, sent over my degree. A week later the recruiters called and said the school had changed their mind and that they'd find me a new job. After a month of fruitless leads on their part and increasing irritation on mine, I gave up and told them to forget about it and to please send my degree back. Never saw that degree again.
Most recruiters seem to just reply to me once and then never bother calling back or answering emails.
I've had a couple of recruiters and a few schools go off on me because I wasn't looking at their "2.0, 30 hours a week, in Seoul" offer and theirs alone. |

For the people going on about the "tarring" and "brush", you would be amazed at how people sometimes actually say things differently in different countries, and even different areas of those countries. You are all probably right. |

There are, no doubt, lots of foreign players in Korea who will do anything to get with the local women. However, the case you cite is not an example of a player in action.
While both individuals in a relationship have a responsibility to state, at some point, what their intentions are with the other person, both people also have a responsibility to find out what the other person wants and what their intentions are if they are not stated.
In this case, the foreign guy who broke up with his K-girlfriend when his contract ended is not a player unless he lied to her about what he wanted from the relationship. He should have made it explicit that he did not want anything long term, but some of that responsibilty also rests on the woman.

What's up with recruiters going off on people they are trying to entice with work? If somebody like that goes off on me, they will be met with the sound of a dial tone (which is what happened to Julice ). I once had a telemarketer go off on me when I told her to put me on their no call list. I hope her supervisor was listening in on that call~ |
