references, work experience, education, hobbies, publications, grants? Well? What do you value most on your resume?

Continuity. I had a few spaces of unemployment between jobs right after graduation that HR directors just loved to rip into.

Usually means you were let go unexpectedly (start up going belly up, or getting fired on your day off), or left in a hurry, neither of which usually have good stories behind them.

Being consistently employed for over 5 years is a nice cushion.

That's been a big one for me. I got an insurance settlement once and decided to take a couple months off (crappy job, anyways) and do some road tripping in the US. I had a hell of a time justifying that. It made sense to me at the time and it still does, I don't know why so many employers couldn't understand.
