I don't want to see it and i don't think society is in any way served by showing it. Remember when Brandon Lee died? Nobody saw that nor should anyone have seen it. I know we are all part of the Youtube generation but I feel watching this sort of thing can bring no good to anyone. And just a note on my personal beliefs, I am totally for a free media and freedom of information but this is one that doesn't pass the smell test.

The stories today have Terri Irwin saying Steve has specifically said to "keep the cameras rolling" and that he joked that he would definately want his death filmed. Terri remembers replying "they wouldn't show it anyway, you know."

Too lazy to look the stories up again.

I honestly believe that Steve himself would want it shown, and given that he indicated that as he was dying, it would be no disrespect to do so. If it was anyone else, hell no, but in this case, I think it should be shown, if Terry agrees. She'd know better than anyone, I guess. I'd watch it.

Exactly.

In fact, it would help the cause he was forwarding.

Steve being Steve, I'd watch it. Seems like the honourable thing to do. Kind of like paying one's respects. (I don't watch car crashes and usually turn away at violent scenes in films, but this is different, significant to him in a way, a unique way, given who he is and what he was doing)

The votes so far are 1-1-1-1-1
..... too many poll options perhaps, diffuses the issue... or reflects the range of perspectives

It'll grow, but I wanted to put in all the most likely options, I hate the polls on there that say yes/no. I am still missing many other possible options, but felt those were the major ones.

I don't think it should be shown myself, though not destroyed. Give it more time, when people will watch it for what it could do to help, and not now where it is the flavour of the week and people are curious.

The JFK shot is shown all the time.

You can't blame peoples morbid curiosity I guess. Sex, violence..and death are all compulsive viewing.

Only way it could be justified is if Mrs Irwin gave her consent.

They could make a movie celebrating his life. All the money from the movie could go towards the Steve Irwin foundation (if it exists). Would be an interesting documentary, and they could show the death scene as long as it wasn't too brutal. Either way the man went out like a badass. If the family didn't want it released and it was leaked that would be a different story. If that is the case they should destroy it.

I think it's okay to show the footage up to the point where he is stung by the Stingray. They shouldn't show the cardiac arrest that follows. Let the man die in peace. His death should not become an amusement for sickos.

Oh, if you are going by my quote, this conversation happened some time in the past, not right when he got stung. But he may have then too...as he was always telling his crew to keep the cameras rolling, no matter what happens. But just to be clear, this conversation I quoted happened at some time previous to the day he was stung, perhaps years before, who knows.

I voted to keep it and show it.

While the show was educational and did a good job of raising awareness about conservation issues, the basic appeal was that is was a crazy guy messing about with deadly animals. Think of the typical episode:

Steve crawls through the jungle. Grabs some nasty looking snake and holds it up by its tail. Stares at it with that rapt, loving expression while discussing how one bite would result in a long, agonizing and certain death. Snake lunges at him, and Steve gushes excitably about how it almost got his nose.

The underlying message was that this guy could die at any time, and you, the viewer, would be there to see it happen. Same with all the highlights for upcoming episodes; they always showed Steve narrowly escaping certain death, or possibly facing his final doom.

I say show the tape...the series has been building to this episode from the beginning.

I know...I'm going to hell

Laughing

He was a tough SOB, almost superhuman. Remember the time he got himself sprayed in the face, on purpose nonetheless, by a spitting cobra? I'd love to think that he said, "Crickey! Look at the barb sticking out of my chest. It's huuuugggge!", and simply walked it off like he usually did. But we all know that it didn't end that way.
