Textbook: Middle School English 2 & 3

The �2� book has a red double decker bus on the cover (bus is marked as �London 15�). Everything else on the cover is written in Korean.

These are the textbooks used in my school. One of the teachers has ask me to teach some lessons using these books. A lot of the book is written in Korean and I can not fully grasp the target of the lessons. Is anyone using these books? I would like to get in contact with others and discuss.

I'm using that book as a reference point for my own lessons.

The Korean teachers in my school use that book but told me not to and instead create different lessons - easier said than done as I'm not entirely sure what to expect or what is expected!

I use a similar but probably equally useless book with no focus or stated goals. Luckily I create my own lessons (which can be a pain sometimes) but it beats the sh!t out of following the textbook that I can't follow or understand.

Guess I'm lucky. Mine's got a group of kids playing basketball on the front cover. It's actually almost completely in English except for soem vocab sections. Still don't use it much.

I've left 1 and 2 at home by accident, but my 3 has a pic of an oldfashioned car on the front.

I try to use the book a bit (50% book and 50% my own additional stuff, preferably relevant to the book, but often not) but it's not easy because the material in the book is usually shlt. Some of it I honestly cannot do anything with, especially in 3.

The students are now working in lesson 9 in the English 2 book. From the book I:

Introduce the following vocabulary:

Emperor - Straight forward King, etc.

Exactly - I first give a rough estimate of how many students are in the class and then
count them off as exactly. I tell the time rounded to the nearest five mins. then I give the time exactly to the minute and second, etc.

Century- Straight forward 100 years

Wealth - Straight forward rich, a lot of money and gold, etc.

Symbol - I show a road sign of a car in danger. I ask the students what it is, I explain it is not a real car but only a symbol. I talk about people who have a lot of jewelry as a symbol of wealth, etc.

Invention - (I used the pictures of inventors on page 156 to explain they where the first. They had an idea and made the first one, etc.) I make sure and explain who Gutenberg is and show a picture of a printing press, "a printing press is used to make your text books", etc.

I first have the students read page 160 and then we read it together. We talk about how the above vocabulary fits into the passage. I ask the students if they can think of a new invention that most everyone uses as part of everyday life(handset).


Not very sexy but I hope to make improvements over the comming weeks. I would like to keep this thread going and exchange ideas.

yeah, it is not very good. The text books I saw in my TESOL class seemed much better. At least they had a clear objective to each lesson and the overall book had a structure and order that progressed in a logical manor. This is also the first text book I have seen that has so much non English in the text.

Oh! Does everyone have the CD that comes with each book? It is also filled with mostly Korean, but if you would like a copy let me know and I will burn one for you.

Please keep posting on how you use this text! I only have one teacher that wants me to use it (this represents about 10% of my teaching) but I am excited cause every other teacher just wants me to me a pronunciation side show.

I know these books have a unit on advertising (I have seen it but now I can�t find it). If you will be working on this unit:

I did an activity in my TESOL class using advertising. It is a ask and answer, speak and listen activity.

� I made two sales flyers.
� One was from Carrefour and one was from E-mart.
� I divided the class into pairs and gave one of the pair the Carrefour flyer and the other the E-mart flyer.
� I told them they had to go shopping to buy items for their whole family (a separate list for each partner).
� I gave them a budget of 25,000 won.
� They had to ask back and fourth what was the price of an item and decide where to buy. They were instructed that they had to buy the items at the lowest price.
� If they got it right they would buy every item on the list and spend exactly 25,000 won.

It went over well with the students.

Can I ask what kind of things you do when you're not using the book? I'm in a similar situation to you, but I've been told not to use the book. What kind of pronunciation exercises do you do? Do you use any particular websites? I'm new here and a bit short of resources and ideas since I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be teaching!

I just wrote a list of 10 sentences using commonly mispronounced words. I made a handout of the sentences below. I read and have the students repeat. I pick out words from each sentence and have the students repeat that word independently. You can also use poems.

Example:
1. I watch TV everyday.
2. I like to eat ice cream.
3. I really want new shoes.
4. To go to the school you turn right at the next street.
5. I have the wrong tools to build a chair.
6. Excuse me, you dropped your pencil.
7. I sang happily at my friends party.
8. I wanted to make many friends at the party.
9. I got up early to get ready for school.
10. It is never cold, but it is often hot.

The Little Plant
1. In the heart of a seed,
2. Buried deep so deep,
3. A tiny plant
4. Lay fast asleep.
5. "Wake," said the sunshine,
6. "And creep to the light."
7. "Wake," said the voice
8. Of the raindrops bright.
9. The little plant heard
10. And it rose to see,
11. What the wonderful,
12. Outside world might be.

Next I think I will use portions of (or if time allows a whole chapter) of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exup�ry. You can download both the text (in PDF format) and an audio (MP3) of the book free online. At the end of the semester I will make copies of the book and MP3 available to any student that would like to read it in its entirety.
