In my opening month of classes as a newbie, I inherited a rather overweight and objectionable young 13 yr old who thought his heroic resistance to foreign occupation, singing the "pukking USA" song as he left class, would earn the respect of Tangun.

His sullen refusal to undertake my commands and casual disruption while I spoke earned an instant bawling out. But Fatboy, as I then christened him, dug his heels in. Some of his classmates adopted the moniker to ridicule him, as I'd planned. However he outweighed them all combined, and soon squashed any dissent. My next ploy of enforcing a detention after class actually ate into my own precious break time, so I discontinued it. The bosses advice to "be nicer to him" I rejected and opted for the smashie and nicey treatment: rewarding his slightest sign of positivity with copious praise, and coming down hard on his every misdemeanour. A standoff ensued.

The grand finale arrived when he brought in a selection of tucker one day and started his banquet while ignoring my initially gentle encouragement to study. After scattering every last bag of chips on the floor I exploded in rage and tore his empty exercise book to pieces, before throwing his book bag and all contents across the class. I then refused to teach him ever again.

The lesson was never replaced and I got more (paid) free time, so I suppose it was a victory.

i know it can be super frusterating
and impossible to deal with
but i think you handled this situation pretty poorly

no matter how demonic some of these little brats can seem
the ARE just kids
and there are reasons for their behavior

oh well at least its over with

the first few months are prbably be the toughest
just getting a feel for running the classroom
more and more you'll figure out how to discipline but still keep it together

It sounds like you were quite angry.

I think it would have been better to just send him out if class (although I don't do that because bad students DONT WANT to be in class so you are just rewarding them). If you sent him out, he wouldn't take up your time and get you stressed out. And you wouldnt have messed up your classroom.

Yes let us pick on the poor fat Korean kid, that is a really smart way of teaching him, especially when the lovely country of America has one of one of the fattest kids in the world rations per head of population. Good to see a teacher can take control of the situation. Typical lazy ass teacher.

This is one of the reason's education sucks here. They are educated to be retards like most students in America

I hope you quit teaching. You are a disgrace. Inciting the other kids in the class to call the kid fatboy is grounds for firing you in my opinion. I suggest you go back to whatever you did before coming to Korea.
