Wow! With all that space to yourself, WHY would you want roommates? I'd rather have the space than extra money and the headaches of having roommates.

There's an odd psychology about having roommates/flatmates. You'll be going along from one shared housing situation to another, year after year, it feels natural, you're not thinking too deeply about it. Then something will happen where you find yourself on your own for the first time, and suddenly if feels just right and you can't ever go back to the roommate thing again.

I think that divorced people make the worst roommates in the universe. There ought to be a law against them.

I still disagree. I know the routines of some of the people on my floor. I am assuming almost everyone has routines. People notice, especially for whities. You would also have to lie consistently at work. This is assuming all goes well with the roomate and he keeps a low profile (which if you are hiring illegal ones with no contract or ties to you, isn't a safe bet).

My mother was a property manager in Toronto. Landlords do not like subletting at all, but realize it's necessary. Doing it without their permission is usually illegal (unless the lease specifically says so) and can only be done by the leasee (the school I am assuming). I don't know what the penalties are in Korea??? It's just not worth it.

From a personal point of view, why would you want roomates? I don't need the extra money bad enough for the crap you have to put up with roomies. The problems with any roomie (even a friend) with no legal ties to an apartment are staggering. Not a good idea.

Seoul isn't Toronto. As I was saying, rarely would a Korean landlord know, and even more rarely would they care enough to complain. I mean, we're not talking about 10 illegal immigrants to a unit here -- Seoul isn't a Western city. Once a Korean landlord has your chonsei, they can be some of the most difficult people to track down.

My apartment is quite different. But I live in a smaller city, so that might account for it.

No, but I am 1/8 Metis Smile

How can you be 1/8th Metis? Maybe you mean 1/8th native, which makes you a Metis.

Hey, laogaiguk, if you're so convinced that you can tell a person's ethnic background over the internet, guess mine.

I really, really don't understand that? Where did I say that? I wasn't guessing anyone's, nor expecting him too. It was a joke. I am going to guess though you are "anal". Wink
Anyways, my great grandmother was Metis (native of the Metis tribe for the people who like details). I am also one half British, and have the passport to show for it.

i had a situation like this, my middle school gave me a three bedroom apt. after six months a new teacher came, he was a Korean English teacher, and we became pretty good friends. I offered for him to move in, what we did was he asked the school but said he is not paying rent, so the school didnt feel like i had too much space or was taking advantage of the situation, then he gave me some money anyways. worked out pretty well, as many problems he could help with, like getting cable hooked up or actually reading and understanding all the apt notices.

You know, the fact that your grandma was a Metis makes you one by one. There aren't traditional Metis tribes in the Maritimes Metis were either members of the native tribes and/or living with the 'Europeans' (most of which were Metis, anyway). So, where I'm from, you don't need to be a member of a Metis tribe to be a Metis since there are no such tribes.

PS. I read somewhere that when natives in the Maritimes signed a treaty with England, one of the British officer observed that the Indian chiefs spoke like Frenchmen, looked like Frenchmen, and had Frenchmen's mannerisms (I guess he was trying to say that they shouldn't sign a treaty because the chiefs were as much Frenchmen as they were Natives).

My Dad's from either Saskatchewan or Manitoba, I can't remember, though he grew up in Toronto after the family moved.

so true.

i have a large place myself - 3 bedrooms - one turned into a living room. originally i got this one with the intention of possibly renting out a room. but once in, i found i love having a big open large place all to myself. i wouldn't even consider renting a room now.
