I want to send out a big THANKS FOR NOTHING! to everyone for their kind assistance on my recent ice cream purchase adventure. After posting that, I headed out on two wheels over slick, drizzly, steep and DARK mountain roads to get to B-R before 10 o'clock. They actually close at 11 o'clock, but who knew?
I tried to remember some flavours people mentioned. I'd say about 80% of all the ice cream I've consumed in my life has been vanilla, french vanilla, or spumone. Places like B-R 31 can really annoy me.
I asked what's new. "What's new?" They showed me ever-loving favourite 4-flavour WELL BEING assortment. (Well Being = Korean) They were:
Green Tea: rather chalky and bizarre. I've had it before.
Jasmine Tea: sounds better than it tastes. chalky, a little bitter
Pumpkin Pudding: about what you'd expect, but sweeter
Red Bean: Yeah, fusion. It's an East-Meets-West, You-Meet-Korea, "ice cream-meets-patbingsoo" thingy
"Koreans really like these best!" "Good for health!" And stamina!
I've had enough of the usual arrogant Western ice cream flavour imperialism. Korea should assert its independent defence capability & National Pride™ in this area, and us offer Goguma Ice Cream and Fermented Bean Paste Ice Cream and Chamisul Ice Cream. While taking away all other flavours. |

They can put up to three flavours in one pint, and that's exactly what everyone orders. Like a pint with 3 flavours is better than one with 2. But I normally prefer to screw with their heads and ask for just 2. "Half of X and half of Y. Nope, just those two. Ban-ban." It also makes it cleaner. I like keeping different flavours segregated and isolated from opportunities for self-advancement.
Different serving girls, different B-R branches, the "just 2 flavours" thing never fails to stun them for a brief moment. |
I know.
Try asking for an entire pint of only ONE flavour. Now that, my friend, shocks the hell out of them. They usually have to consult with the manager to see if it can be done. |

At Baskin Robbins it's got to be chocolate mousse first, cheesecake second, and green tea very definitely last. You think 'Green tea? Interesting..' so you try it once then the next time someone offers it's 'Ice-cream? Oh. Green tea. No thanks'. |

You think Green Tea is bad? Try Secret Garden of Herb sometime. As bad as the name is creepy. |

Yeah, I'm afraid I do. And I've had several different brands of it here. The only time I've ever liked it wasn't in Korea but at Korean restaurants in the West and Hong Kong. Those were yummy, but I've never had anything nice here from a store or a restaurant.
Green tea is to ice cream what red bean paste is to a chocolate clair. |

I have to amend this.

It's not bitter at all, quite the opposite. Maybe it was just the small sample spoonful they gave me that tasted off. Jasmine Tea ice cream is in fact not chalky or bitter. If anything, it's too sweet. Overpoweringly sweet. And certainly doesn't belong in any "Well Being" category.
Jasmine Tea
A delicious pairing of delicate jasmine and vanilla mousse ice-creams swirled with a white tea ribbon. |

A Japanese cafe in my city sells wasabi icecream.
I'm not sure if that's the best flavour though. |

My ex-fiance from Deutschland had some cream that, in some sense, beat the heck outta anything served up by the kids on patrol at the I'taewon Baskin Robbins.
I sheet thee not: It was sweet yet pungent.
Hmmm... Me wonders if the Green Tea at good ol' Baskins could give me a nostalgia-induced woodie.
I'll get back to y'all, eh.
Carry on. |
