|
|
Im at the point of re-negotiating my contract to stay a second year at my hogwan. But I need help understanding what would be a reasonable raise to ask for!
the details:
Current salary 1.9m
Overtime 18,000w hour
30 hours a week
10 days vacation
I pay pension 80,000w /month
5050 medical
month bonus on completion
return flights
one room housing only utilities.
My director is very happy with me and wants me to stay. All the kids like me and I have kids joining the Hogwan who give the reason on their application "to communicate with matin". and other Adult students who dont want to sign up for lessons if Im not the teacher! Im pretty well known in the town and am a pretty good advertisement for the place.
I enjoy where Im at and want to stay, but I dont want to work for less than I should be getting!
I have an online Oxford Certificate.
Can anyone advise me what a reasonable raise would be? I was thinking around 2.2m
And if you think asking for more vacation is a possibility?
Or negotiating a 10month contract?
Whats been your best renegotiation?
Any help welcomed! |

You should be able to get more than 2.0 with no experience. I would shoot for the stars....ask for 2.4 and settle for 2.2. Be prepared to walk because with one year experience you can EASILY get 2.2 somewhere else. |

I'm not sure if this means anything, but I have no experience and I've asked for and received 2.2 from a lot of positions, not to mention 2.4 and 2.5 offers. The position I've decided on pays 2.2 and I should be in Korea very soon. Trust me, it doesn't hurt to ask, I've yet to be turned down yet. |

Considering the current market and what you bring to the table I would say 2.2 is a reasonable expectation here. You could also ask for the OT rate to be raised to 20 000 Won. |

Bring up vacation, but only knowing that you will have to drop it later. Use it and then say you will drop that with a higher salary. Hagwons do not give extra vacation (almost always), but you can get the money. Go with what Homer said atleast. |

Dont worry too much about the vacation, just ask for a bit of time off between contracts. I got a month off between contracts, but it was unpaid. A friend of mine got 2 weeks paid, and another got 6 weeks unpaid. This is of course on top of the 10 days paid vacation per year.
And yes another return airfare. They should fly you home (for the end of your previous contract) and back to Korea again (for the start of your new contract) or you could negotiate a flight to a different country for that time.
I wouldnt settle for less than 2.1mil (bare minimum). You should get more simply because of your reputation and value to the hagwon. You could certainly get more elsewhere!
Everything else seems pretty standard. |

are you taking time off between contracts? Using your return ticket? If not ask for cash instead of the ticket...roundtrip runs about 2000$
Salary of 2.2
Ot rate of 25,000
if you're happy with the 30 hours a week stick with it....if not negotiate for what you want
questions to ask yourself are: how much overtime do you actually do? Is it worth raising?
How many students does the school have? Have your class sizes increased over the year?
If you answer yes to these questions then you already know the answers. 2.2 salary is definately what you should be gunning for! |

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated. I would like to take 3 weeks or a month off between contracts, go home, relax gather the troops again so to speak and come back!
I do around 4 hours a week overtime so a OT raise would come in handy!
I am going to try and negotiate a 10 month contract too!
I will let you know how it goes.
thanks again |

Would a ten month contract affect severance/airfare?
Would you get 10/12 of it (about 83%)? |
