|
|
The Veggie Club will be having a goodbye-to-summer vegetarian BBQ on Namsan this Saturday (the 16th) starting at around noon, maybe one PM. We'll have some portable grills for some grilled veggies, veggie burgers, veggie dogs, and other good barbecue stuff -- chips, beer, etc. I'm going to go up on Tuesday to scout out a good place to hold it where we can play frisbee too.
I sent an e-mail out to everyone on my list, but if you didn't get it or just want to attend, post here or PM me and I'll put you on my mailing list.
Peace! |

If "Kermo" can come that would probably attract more people than my coming would scare away ...
I think that the cook-out is a great idea, and I hope there's nice weather and a good turn-out ...
I still have some free small cookbooks to give out (with 60 international vegetarian recipes...) and I think I'll give them to the first eight people who - on this thread - commit to going (and actually show up... ) |

I wish I could go, but have another committment this weekend... but I am really curious to know where you can buy those veggie burgers and veggie dogs. |

Whatever you do, keep the "Saturds" away from the grill. |

A couple of people have written to me asking if the barbecue is still on. Yes, it very much is!
I went to Namsan yesterday to scope things out; a somewhat confused young lady informed me that they have barbecues under the tower at 6, but that there's no other suitable place. That's certainly not true as I saw a couple of decent-looking places with tables and a pavilion near the top when I rode the cable car. My girlfriend was anxious to get home so I didn't have time to get precise directions, but if we hike up we'll surely get to somewhere good.
I also dug out an old K-Scene magazine which had an article about picnicking on Namsan. The author went in from an entrance about 10 minutes from Myeongdong Station. Anyway, if anyone has a more specific recommendation about where to go, I'm all ears; otherwise we can plan to meet at Myeongdong Station and walk up. |

Ok all, here is the plan.
I've been e-mailed very specific directions from Myeongdong Station which I've cut-and-pasted below. I'm going to go there an hour or two early to take up the food and grill, find a good spot, and leave them there with a guardian. At 1:00 you should start arriving; go up exit #2 and I'll be waiting there. I'll go with people at 1:15 and RTeacher has offered to wait until 1:30 and go with people who come a bit late. Then we can grill until our heart's content! If you get lost or come late, you can call us at 010 7711 0218.
I'll buy the food and portable grill, and bring receipts so everyone can split up the costs (about 10,000 each).

From Myeongdong station, just head up the hill in the opposite direction from the department stores. You quickly come to a Y with a big hotel (this will be obvious.) I usually follow the road to the right up, where it comes out next to the cable car boarding station. Namsan is on the other side. Turn right, walk past the boarding station. After about 50 meters, you can see where a road starts to go up Namsan, and there is a broad concrete stairway/path up the mountain. This goes to the top. |
Myeongdong Station is on line 4, the green line.

Well, it was definitely a worthwhile experience, and I commend "Hater Depot" for doing a great job to make it happen. We actually had a "Seoul Veggie Club" record turn-out of 15 who braved the threat of menacing typhoon rains to meet at Mt. Namsan for what was billed as a "Veggie BBQ"...
OK, we did encounter some technical difficulties - like not finding an actual BBQ-type grill - but everyone ate some good-tasting pan-fried faux meats and stir fried vegetables and dubu... Veggie hot dogs and some tasty fake turkey slices were bought from SM Ching hai, and I made some homemade veggie burgers consisting mainly of cooked brown rice, lentils, mung beans, sweet potatoes, peppers, olive oil, Indian spices and sunflower seed butter... Native Korean Solbeena made some excellent Korean sauces that even made the tofu palatable...
It was kind of a trip getting to the cable car that goes to the top of the Mt. Namsan, and we pretty much had to trek about half-way down (it seemed...) before we found a decent spot to set up. Naturally, Koreans who passed by were greatly amused at seeing us our funky-looking waygook picnic. Here are some pics I took [for some reason I couldn't post a fourth picture that included "Kermo" - I'll post it in a new thread in "Off-Topic"...)

I was so tired yesterday that the first time I read your post I thought it asked "Where are the beers? (or maybe that was the other thread in "Off-Topic"...) |

It wasn't that much a beer drinkin' bunch. There were a couple large (liter?) bottles, and I brought four cans of non-alcoholic malt liguor ... I was wondering about bear and deer myself... |

The vegetarian groups in Korea used to celebrate World Vegetarian Day with a nice event. I sure hope they're still active and will have another one this year. |
