Check this out. This guy has been poring over old Soviet Venera data from the 70s (I think that was the 70s anyway, doesn't matter) and has been using the original data to reconstruct the images. Not just for the fun of it but also because there's a lot of data there that got lost back when photographic technology wasn't as advanced as now. He's turned images that look like this:

The hills didn't even show up the first time, so there's a big plus right there. Dope. Here's the link.
