I'd like to know how many of you treat Koreans back in your home countries like inferiors...

When talking to Koreans in Canada, I always find myself lumping Koreans in with Pakastani's and Filipino's as if they're part of the same social class... I'll say things like: "Yeah, the Filipinos and the Pakastini's have a lot in common with the Koreans...".

I find myself doing this out of spite and a desire to put them down and remind them of who they really are as a group in the larger scheme of things...

I really had to bite my tongue today to stop myself from telling a fairly wealthy Korean women than in Canada her son should aspire to be nothing more than factory worker... because he's just a Korean.

If I had never lived in Korea for almost three years, I would never do this, but after living with the Koreans for almost three years, it's hard not to want to inject reality into their little fantasy worlds...

I thought you were married to a Korean and had half-Korean children, which would make your post even more bafflingly offensive. But maybe I've got you mixed up with someone else.

It doesn't sound like you have a lot of use for Filipinos and Pakistanis, either. Are there any other ethnic groups low on your list?

I think I understand your point. In my experience, the Koreans back home had a huge inferiority complex. What caused this? I think it was the way people saw and treated them. There are always jokes about Asians doing laundry, being a "nerd", the stereotypes are set and cannot be changed easily. I also think that this is one reason the Korean Americans have to act so "loud" here. They seem to have something to prove, like "I was treated bad on your turf, now I am on my own turf"........whatever. The main thing is that Koreans get power when they stick together. The group mentality is all they have. They would LOVE to be part of the cool group. Look at what they have done with that football player, Hines Ward. I have seen 3 different ads with him wearing a KEB football jersey. They hated mixed kids, but if one MAKES IT BIG IN AMERICA, the Koreans will worship him or her. This shows their insecurities. Just look at the news as well. They seem to just brag about some Korean making it big at Yale, or some Korean winning a prize in Austria, or some Korean making a great discovery at UCLA, or some baseball player in the major leagues doing this or that. I think all of this comes from the way they are treated.

I wouldn't dare be racist to them but I have to fight the urge to run up to them, say "anyeong hasseyo" and then run off giggling my tittie$ off when they reply. I also feel the need to ask if they can eat bland food, are familiar with a knife and fork or if they are aware of the glorious two seasons that bless my native state of Queensland.

Aren't that many Koreans in the Maritimes so I doubt it will come up. Instead I'll just take out my frustrations on the Chinese community.
