What is the average rate for overtime in a public/private high school? (And is it different in and outside of Seoul?)

I'm getting W20,000 per class in the high school where I teach, but will get W25,000 for the extra middle school class.

[Mildly amusing anecdote: The middle school extra class co-ordinator came to our building yesterday to beg me to teach at least one extra class for them. The high school co-ordinator sat at the table with us while we discussed it in English. Then at the end I brought up pay. They immediately switched to Korean and the middle school woman told him they would offer me W25,000. He clued her in that I was only getting W20,000 at the high school. Then they switched back to English and told me the offer. I said, "No, I prefer the W25,000 that she was going to offer me." Both of them blushed.

Today my co-ordinator came over to tell me that this semester I will be getting W20,000, but that next term they will pay W25,000.

It DOES pay to know your numbers! Very Happy ]

Nice!

My contract states that I get the same as Korean teachers but doesn't state the exact amounts. I should have had this clarified before I signed the contract but I thought they would get fair compensation. Apparently they get 25,000 for extra classes between 9-5 but any work after that and on weekends...a measley 7,500 won. So I get no extra classes on weekdays but at least once a month have to travel for at least an hour (unpaid) either after school or on a weekend to make 15,000 won per hour (they're very generous to double the 7,500 for us foreigners).

I teach at a public middle school in a small city near Busan. Overtime here is 40,000 won per hour for anything over 22 hours a week.

That's why I simply refuse to do any overtime.

Would a Korean employer ever take advantage of a foreign teacher?

South Korean Teacher Workforce
In 2001, grade school teachers just entering the workforce earned the equivalent to 27,092 US dollars, on average. When the teachers had 15 years of experience, that average jumped to 46,548 US dollars. Finally, the top salary for teachers in Korea averaged to be around 74,843 US dollars.

What is your overtime rate for non-teaching time?

I am doing a lot of extra work with the school board doing testing, making tests, proofreading, and attending useless meetings. For those of you who do similar work: as these are not "teaching hours" is the rate different or the same as your regular overtime rate?
