idiotic to say the least especially since he is not that good, its a shame that one of the past and few dynasties of the nhl has been reduced to this...
fire the back up goalie turned GM and for chr**ts sake, Gary Bettman think a little about who you want as an owner....

Actually, Wang made the deal himself. Snow had nothing to do with it. Smith was fired because he was going to play hardball with DiPietro...give him a 1-2 year deal for about 2.5 mil and make him earn a better contract. |

Well, it sounds ridiculous. But financially it isn't too bad. True, they've got this albatros on their backs for two decades. True, they're stuck paying a mediocre-to-decent goalie for 15 years. But in a few years, I don't think 4 million per will be that unreasonable rate even for a backup goaltender. And in 2021, unless the NHL climate changes drastically, I think 4 million will be very reasonable for an experienced goaltender. Hell, they were paying guys like Byron Dafoe and Craig BIllington over a million to be backups a few years ago.
The biggest problem is if DiPietro implodes, gets injured, or just sucks, they won't have much flexibility in getting another starting goalie. And it'll be damn near impossible to trade this guy in the future.
I just don't get why they traded Luongo to get this guy. Millbury was a tool. |

Doesn't make sense what so ever. Islanders are in a lot of trouble and tying up a player for 15 years makes no sense as who is going to take that contract off your hands if you want to trade him in the future.
It's amazing Bettman still has a job as he has done a crap job and should be fired. Lets face it, hockey is never going to be a national sport in the States. It'll be popular in certain regions.
NHL should bring back teams to Winnipeg and Quebec as these markets could probably financially support a team with the salary caps in place. At least they wouldn't have a problem filling up their rinks, unlike some oif the teams south of the border. |

The guy should have, like too many promising Yanks, stayed in the N.C.A.A. until he finished his Degree.
One must admit that he was f'in brilliant at the World Juniour Championships when he was 17.
With DiPietro in net, the Yanks almost beat a lesser team from Canada for the Bronze Medal.
T.S.N.'s Gary Dornhoeffer and the very Scottish-looking guy with the strong Ontario accent, who used to be supportive of the U.S. kids in his essays for The Hockey News and T.S.N. commentary at the W.J.C., stated that DiPietro would be a very, very good goaltender in the N.H.L.
The kid from Winthrop, Massachusetts (Maine, really) is in need of a confidence-builder as he has immense skiils compared to most N.H.L. goalies.
Weird how he has not, like too many First-Rounders (Alexandre Daigle, Wickenheiser, et-al), coped with the expectations of fans, scouts, journalists, and owners, eh.
What a shame.
Let's hope he does not succumb to the defacto increased pressure that is his awesome contract. |

Let's be honest here, this could never, and will never happen.. they COULDN'T support teams even with the cap.. the cap just went up 4-5 million this past off-season.. those teams would have been crying poverty already.. there's not enough money there...
As for DiPietro getting paid on the cheap, do you really think that if he becomes the best goalie in the world, that he won't want to renegotiate his contract in the future, especially when Wang is out of the picture? |

Wang learned nothing from the Allan Houston deal or even the Raptor's cap troubles over the past few years. Toronto didn't really make one huge mistake, just a few small ones that crippled the team for 4-5 years. Whether or not Dipietro becomes a bargan at 4.5 for the next 6-7 years isn't the issue. The problem is he won't be a bargan for the last 5-6 years of that deal. Short term gain long term pain? What happens if Dipietro pulls a Pronger and becomes "unhappy" with the team, coach, city? Nothing, he is stuck there because he is pretty much undealable now. That was one of the dumbest moves in sports history. Offer him 6 years at the same money and he would of taken it the same as Hemski didn a couple of months ago. |
