Anyone bought a 500GB external over here? I've built my own 200GB (enclosure and drive bought separately) but was told the 500GB drives are super expensive in Korea. I've found them online for about $200 in the US but not here. I need firewire 800/400 and USB 2. Really love the Western Digital My Book Pro

| Truthfully, I buy my "high-end" stuff from the States, send it to my sister in Florida, then have her ship it here. In the long run, for me, it's been beneficial. It's hard to find the higher-end stuff here. |

Try HERE and get a Korean friend to help you buy it (you will need their national ID). As you can see, the ones on that page with the WD enclosure is just slightly more expensive than the standalone hdd, why not just buy something like that?
THIS ONE, for example runs on usb2.0 and is hot-swappable (you can interchange drives from the enclosure). BTW, if you are running a Windows machine, you don't need firewire AND usb2.0 and would probably be better off just sticking to usb2.0 (it's cheaper and the more standard format). |

| Thanks for the links and info, will look into them. I need firewire as I'm running on Mac that is about 4 years old, doesn't even have USB 2 or firewire 800. Will probably upgrade in the next 6 months and want to make sure the drive will make a smooth transition. Do you have experience ordering from that site? Thanks again. |

I was assuming that you were running a computer with Windows and was going to mention the fact that unless you are running a Mac, it probably wouldn't be suitable for you. But, since you are a Mac user, go for it.
Just so you know, 802.11g is now out and 802.11n is expected to be implemented in IEEE (firewire), uses as soon as next year which will reflect a 600Mbps transfer speed. I doubt this will affect this purchase, but in the future, you may want to look for it in later purchases ie. a compatible system when you actually make your laptop purchase. |
