His occupation is mentioned only once in Mark. For carpenter the Greek says tekton, which could mean carpenter, mason, or metal-worker. The word also suggests being a master of the trade, and might be related to technician.

There's a popular idea that Christ's family was poverty-stricken, but Christ evidently received some education (He read Hebrew scripture in the temple but spoke Aramaic and possibly some Greek), and may have been able to take some formal training in His trade. But it all hangs on people asking about Christ in Mark 6, "Is this the carpenter?" and not a direct statement that He was.

call me a fool but I thought he was the SON of a carpenter....

SPOILER ALERT!!!!! don't read on.....

Mark had the people in Jesus' hometown call him a "carpenter," not because he was actually a carpenter, but because Mark wished to create irony.

Jesus taught that only those with eyes to see and ears to hear would enter the kingdom of God, but in his hometown, Mark has the townspeople call Jesus a carpenter to remind his readers of the shamed carpenter in Isaiah whose eyes could not see.
