Help settle a 17 page arguement.
Is golf a "sport", or is it a - big girly stroll on a lawn stopping every now and then to whack a stationary ball with a stick- "activity"?? |

Golf is a sport.
Sports Illustrated thinks it's a sport (Tiger's the only athlete to win Sportsman Of The Year, TWICE, let me remind you). ESPN thinks it's a sport. CNN thinks it's a sport. BBC Sport thinks it's a sport. The sports guy on your 10 o'clock news thinks it's a sport. Wikipedia thinks it's a sport. The ESPY Awards think it's a sport (Tiger's a 4 time winner, which is tied with Lance Armstrong for most wins. Jordan has one win.). The New York Times thinks it's a sport. Yahoo Sports thinks it's a sport. Every on-line betting site thinks it's a sport. The NCAA thinks it's a sport.
You may not like it. You may not enjoy watching it. You may not understand it.
But, golf is a sport. |

Hapki's argument doesn't actually prove anything, but just look up the word "sport" in the dictionary and you will see golf is a sport.

Masturbation is more athletic, and more fun, than golf.
Seriously, look at golf. 90% of the "physical activity" is strolling around a park while some guy you pay carries all your stuff. When i go for a walk in the park, I carry all my stuff because Im not a lazy *beep*.
10% of the "physical activity" is hitting a little ball that is not even moving. It just sits there for you to hit. You take a stick, hit the ball and stroll on after it.
This is a sport?! Pregnant women get more of a workout walking around the house or the park. |

Happeningthang, it's probably a good idea that you did this poll. When I started this thread about Tiger Woods, I had no idea it would turn into a 17 page debate as to whether golf is actually a sport. I've always assumed it was. Anyway, it's been an interesting dialogue. |

Golf is a game, not a sport.
I think in order to apply the term "sport" the activity should have some athleticism and stamina involved.
Or, in the words of THE AMERICAN Mark Twain, "Golf is a good walk spoiled." |

Look, I agree golf is not a sport, and actually may be a bit of an insult to real sports players But that's just my opinion. This thread is useless, because I have shown that golf is a sport by definition.
Apparently, I have also shown mast*rbation is a sport. I bet some people on this board would be in the top rankings of that one

It is an insult. The latest one insulted has been Federer whan all the hoopla about Tiger going to the US Open final erupted. Lets see, one of the greatest atheletes ever, and perhaps the best ever in his sport is visited by some overhyped guy who hits a ball between walking around in a park. Now the media has the gall to make a connection between the two as if they are equals, as if Tiger who plays a physically undemanding game is somehow an equal of Federer who plays an extremely physically demanding sport. Whats next? The guy who dominates lawn bowling is going to visit Zidane and it will be all over the media? Oh but ESPN (they show spelling bees and poker) thinks golf is a sport. Um, no, they also show poker and spelling bees. The only reason is money. Golf is a game with MONEY and a following and ESPN wants to make money from viewers and sponsors. Nothing wrong with that. Lumberjack games, poker, spelling bees also allow them to make a profit, golf just has much more sponsorship and a bigger audience (though I have mo idea why, it must be one of the most boring games ever). None of that makes it a sport because it just doesnt fit the basic criteria of sport: physical exertion. Sorry, there has to be a threshold for this one because if we use the level of physical exertion in golf as the baseline, we might as well make breathing, napping, masturbation and riding the subway a sport. And you know what? if any of those could pull in an sudience and advertising money, ESPN would show them. Along with golf. Which is NOT a sport. |

haha hockey is a sport though a lame one.
Heres my question: why does golf HAVE TO be a sport? Let it be a game and enjoy it (if you can). Why does it have to be a sport? |

I agree golf is utter shlte - as is athletics (long jump? someone jumping into a f***ing sandpit? heavens), test cricket, American football, baseball, basketball and pretty much everything apart from Soccer, tennis and my beloved darts.
But I'd be unhappy describing any of those I don't like - pathetic, crap, inferior though they all are - as not sports.
W@nking clearly isn't a sport in itself, since there's no element of competition. But if you have a "who's got the lumpiest custard?" competition, then it arguably becomes a sport.
Kicking a ball isn;t a sport, but putting 22 men on a pitch and 2 goals at either end, then it becomes a sport. |
