Hi just wondered if anyone knew of any nightlife in Namyangju - any good bars, clubs and if there is much of an expat community there. Kinda in the dark bout the place so any info anyone has would be much appreciated. If any of you live there may even buy you a drink when I arrive...

Cheers

Sorry my new friend, there's nothing of the sort in Namyangju. You will enjoy the fresher air and open space, however. You're not too far from Guri which is a mediocre suburb of Seoul. Guri is connected to Seoul by frequent buses and subways. I imagine you can get your fix on weekends by commuting into Seoul. You'll be fine, but you won't be finding much of a scene in Namyangju. I know because I used to live nearby.

You can take a bus to the subway or take the bus all the way. You can even take a short train line. It took 1.5 hours where I was at. Namyangju is long and skinny and it has some serious traffic jams so I tried to avoid certain rush hours. The land is kind of pretty there but the people are poor. The houses don't look pretty. The people were nice. I got a free dinner and some free bamboo.

I lived in Janghyun-ri last year, which is a small town in Namyangju...there is a downtown area of Namyangju, but it mostly seems to be small pockets of towns scattered about the countryside.

To Cheongyangni, one of the major bus stations in Seoul on the northeast side, it took about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the traffic. You can also catch buses to Sangbong terminal.

Rant coming...

Namyangju is a pit. A mish-mash of sprawling uselessness with aspirations becoming a hole.

I spent 2 forgettable years in that area and have nothing good to say about it. Right now, it's an ocean of construction; narrow, winding roads lined with dumptrucks, slow-moving front-end loaders and porter trucks, all driving recklessly and thoughtlessly. Clean air? Yep...it's right between all the airborne particles from dirt roads and furniture factories. Good luck getting any between 6AM and 11PM. Seems to be where every big-mouthed, hard-drinking, bongo-driving lout in Kyonggi lives as well.

Rant off. Dang I hate that area...

Enjoy your time there and always remember that you are in one of the ugliest areas of Korea.

It's not quite as bad as people are saying, but they're right that it's not central and has nothing to offer in terms of nightlife. I try to be a bit more positive about things. I lived in another 'burg nearby for two years because the job was really good. Looking back I'm glad I kept that great job for two years, but I finally accepted small pay cut for a similar job in Seoul. The time and money I've saved by living in Seoul were worth the paycut I took.

If you're the type of person that needs a social scene and loads of English speakers nearby, then keep moving. It's really not your kind of place. Look for jobs in Seoul.

That's two threads in which we break the sad news to people living in Gyunggido suburbs.

I wouldn't recommend Guri for the nightlife either. Razz
I think the best option is taking the bus into Seoul.
