I am currently in Korea but need to have some Canadian legal documents processed while over here. I need a "Commissioner of Oaths," i.e., "a Commissioner for Oaths is a person who is authorised to verify affidavits, which are statements in writing and on oath, and other legal documents."

In a number of countries, lawyers can act in this capacity. I don't know if this is the case in Korea.

Anyway, how on earth will I be able to find a person who does this sort of thing? I have a couple Korean friends, but I don't know if I'd be able to satisfactorily explain it to them... any ideas?

Would someone be able to do this for me at the Canadian embassy, perhaps?

Booooo to the Canadian Embassy for charging what amounts to $550/hour.

Yaayyyyyy to ttompatz for digging that up.

I sent them a little inquiry, and hopefully when they reply, they'll also point me toward someone who would satisfy the requirements of the great Province of Manitoba for more reasonable fee.

Many Korean lawyers can act as Notary Publics. If you explain what you want, I'm sure your Korean friends will be able to tell you which ones can do it. It is expensive, though.

Here's the official word from the embassy, for the sake of anyone else who searches in future:

Quote:
Good morning,
Korean lawyer may not sign the paper as way of notarisation done by Korean lawyer in Korea is different from the one requested in Canada. You may come to the Embassy with your ID card and the affidavit between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. from Monday to Friday as we do provide with notary service. The fee is 42,500 KRW per document.
Thank you.

Only $50 per document? Damn... I'd expect it to be twice that... true inefficiency takes years of training (and you should count your blessings your taxes were not wasted). Wink
